... then I realized: oh it's just less blindingly bright here. Huh.
Then I realized: OH! It's because the buildings are stone and not canyons of reflective glass and steel. And oh!, the roads meander and curve, and aren't on an endless east-west grid where you walk facing into the sunlight

four times a year, the rising or setting sun crosses the horizon directly over Toronto's east-west-aligned street grid, producing an effect named Torontohenge
the next Torontohenge is October 25 at sunset, with good photo opportunities for the week prior

It’s a few days early for Torontohenge, but it was still pretty sweet.

tonight's sunset TorontoHenge event will be completely obscured by thick, snowy cloud cover
the good news is that there may still be opportunities for pictures over the next week or so, if we get some sunny breaks

Happy Torontohenge day to all who celebrate

this is because in February, the sun sets a little further north each evening, away from its most southerly setting at the winter solstice in December
so for the next week or so, the sun will cross Toronto's east-west street grid just a little bit higher each day

#Toronto tomorrow morning, 6:28 am, weather permitting, you could see an event called Torontohenge, as the sun rises directly over the east-west street grid, best seen amidst the downtown towers
please be careful if you are commuting

#Toronto only two more days for this year's August Torontohenge
still bummed about yesterday's total cloud cover -- was hoping to see the crescent moon beside Venus and Jupiter, with an ISS flyby thrown in for free
forecast for tomorrow and saturday only partly cloudy

here's a great example showing how good pictures can be obtained in the week or so before the August Torontohenge
obviously the effect gets better each day up till the 23rd
well done, Sean

Torontohenge this morning along King Street at 6:30 am. Unfortunately a low bank of cloud blocked sun as it rose higher, so better pics were missed today. Thanks to @rudydotca.bsky.social for the heads up this was happening today.

You might remember him from such hits as co-founding evolt•org at the end of the last century. Or perhaps for tracking Ontario and Toronto history. Or maybe the Doomsday Algorithm. Or possibly tracking Torontohenge.
