#sneckdowns
Always a great way to show how much space cars gobble up and how they don't need all of it. Sneckdowns show that streets can be given back to people!
Snowfall is going to put traffic engineers out of a job. Just replace the snow with sidewalk level concrete and tada you’re done

Tomorrow I’ll probably talk about sneckdowns and all the ways a few inches of snow can show the inefficiencies in your transportation network.

But today I’m gonna throw snow at the wall under my kid’s window and see how close we can get.

I want my municipality to take note of #sneckdowns too
Snow is nature's urban planner: It can show us what parts of the roadway drivers don't use — and what can be reclaimed for pedestrians.

Post your photos and videos of all the #sneckdowns you see and tag us and @mayor.nyc.gov so today's winter wonderland can inspire better streets year-round!

Big snow day incoming for most of our region.

Keep warm, stay safe, and look for sneckdowns! A fun throwback from @streetfilms.bsky.social:

sneckdowns are the best.

Sneckdowns on functioning bus routes are best because they show operation of large vehicles, which streets are often designed around

After the storm passes, a great time for safe streets advocates to look for the "sneckdowns" and share them with your local elected officials. What are we talking about? nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/01/23/s...

Snow accumulations reveal unused road space, offering simple, low-cost opportunities to build curb extensions ('sneckdowns') that calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

The mayor of NYC, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social @mayor.nyc.gov, is aware of sneckdowns (snowy neckdowns) 🙌🏻

In Québec, the @oqlf.ca suggests "améneigement" in French (aménagement + neige) for this

Great grid showing (via #sneckdowns) how you can put traffic calming in your neighborhood.

Certain a weekend snow event in the northeast with a foot+ predicted for DC, Philly, NYC, etc.

Great time to document our streets using "nature's tracing paper"! Get some BEFORE & AFTERS now in your nabe!

sneckdowns ftw!
The morning snow reminded me of all the excess pavement on the western end of Palmer Square. Not only is it dangerous, it's also incredibly ugly.

What I found interesting was that one road was really being used one way.

(Although we need to be careful with sneckdowns as they can be unrepresentative with people driving less in snow)

It looks as though there are some impressive sneckdowns there.

Seems to be a bit of resurgence in the last week about #sneckdowns!

Did you know we made a comic about it?

Sneckdowns*, Utrecht style.

*What the heck is a sneckdown?
A sneckdown, or snow neckdown, is a temporary lane created by snowfall, where snow has built up in the road but not been flattened by bike traffic, effectively reshaping the curb. A sneckdown shows how much road space a bike (or a car) use.

Hovering ten storeys above the street.

Across from Berczy Park.

What could Front St, Scott St and Wellington St look like with expanded pedestrian areas, narrowed driving lanes and additional turning radius for
vehicles to force drivers to slow down?

Sneckdowns are one of the most powerful (and free) urban planning tools in the world…The snow that stays on the asphalt shows us exactly which parts of the road cars don’t actually use. - @liorsteinberg.bsky.social
