Some vermin are cute and cuddly. I submit that the best description is “parasitoid”. Unlike most parasites that feed on their host, parasitoids ultimately kill the organism that sustains them. So cruel and stupid.

Greater bee flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae: Bombylius major) are found in woodlands thoughout much of North America. Adults are usually seen in the spring feeding on wildflowers. Their larvae, however, are parasitoids of wild bees. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, 11 Apr 2016.

They are the worst. Their golden candidate hasn't even started making all of those changes. You would think they would spend energy focusing on that, but then again... they are all ops trying to destroy our party from the inside, instead of trying to stand on their own. They are wannabe parasitoids.

Depending on how much of a high-res image you can get of the larva, I wonder if you can identify parasitoids vs. Cynipids before they emerge.

Closer to the immediate coast tropical milkweed plants this time of year are discouraged because of potential parasitoids and tricking migratory butterflies out of diphase.

Heatwaves, poor diets, and parasitoids all stress insects, but not always in expected ways. New paper with

finds that Drosophila exposed to parasitoids survive extreme heat better than predicted. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

🎧 📻 New Heredity Podcast

Parasites and parasitoids are large drivers of evolutionary change. We hear from Peter Hambäck (Stockholm University @deepsthlmuni.bsky.social) about his work on how beetle larvae combat a wasp that wants to lay its eggs inside them!

Larval development times increased with heatwave duration under some, but not all stressor combinations & L4 vs L5 timing. Humidity affected H-alone more than Parasitoids. Hard to summarise in 300 chars, so here's the fig.
The paper's #openaccess, you can find details there! 4/

Most Ichneumonid wasps (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) are parasitoids that lay their eggs inside other insects. The larvae hatch and slowly eat their hosts alive. Eventually the larvae burst out of their hosts, killing them. Many species are very useful for pest control. Palmyra Michigan, 13 May 2016.

However, your biological supplier will know what the best solutions are (from their catalog) for any particular pest in any particular situation, taking into account the cultivation environment.

Oh, and there's also banker plant systems, which are pretty cool. Grow your own parasitoids. :)

Definitely the spider!! Though I may be way biased against parasitoids in general, it's hard to find them cute after watching them pop out of animals you've tried so hard to rear 😭😭

Parasites and parasitoids are soooooo interesting isn’t it?
Ghost Spider (Anyphaena sp.) and the Small-headed Fly (Acrocera sp.) that emerged from it.

In the second photo you can see it beginning to split open the spider’s abdomen.

Bee fly! They’re gorgeous fluffy little flies with such character! They hover around flowers to sip the nectar.

They are parasitoids. They hover around the holes of wild mining bees. They collect dust/soil to add weight to the eggs & then flick them into the holes. The larvae eat the bee larvae!

I've written #DeathMetal songs about parasitoid wasps ("Hymenoptera" on the Emperor Worm EP) and parasitic fungus ("slithering sickness" on the Death at the Gates... album). More metal bands should write about parasites and parasitoids.

Reviled at home and reviled abroad.
The new POTUS had me thinking about insects today.
Parasitic insects specifically.
Insects which use other insects - not having certain capacities or capabilities on their own.
That pretty much describes the entire "junk drawer."
I learned a new word.
PARASITOIDS

I love these guys. They're parasitoids of woodboring beetles so they show up fairly regularly in my beetle trap samples and are hilarious to look at every time

Great. Now I want to know more about the very metal parasitoids.
