Although mapmakers sometimes present Route 66 as an unbroken path across New Mexico, an old stretch from Santa Fe to Romeroville in San Miguel County offers a unique experience — devoid of lighted diners and neon signs. sfnm.co/4bua8fM
The forgotten side of Route 66: From Santa Fe to Romeroville
It's not all blinding neon and charming diners. Near Santa Fe, what was once Route 66 is now abandoned roadway and private property.

One of the biggest current threats to U.S. democracy? ⬇️

The #Louisiana v. Callais case at the Supreme Court, which could change how mapmakers ensure racial minorities can elect their own leaders.

A memorable line from Jonathan Swift (1712), satirizing decorative inserts as a cover-up for the geographic ignorance of European mapmakers:

“So Geographers in Afric maps, / with Savage-Pictures fill their Gaps; / And o’er uninhabitable Downs / Place Elephants for want of Towns”

Oh yes, mapmakers and dictionaries both do this!

Reindeer appear in more places than you might expect... including maps!

In my testimony, I argued that the City of Burien's camping ban was spatially illegible: the prohibition zone was defined in a complicated way that invited mistakes from city mapmakers and the general public.

Take a look at the maps and decide for yourself: henryspatialanalysis.com/news/public-...

That’s awesome, I love that. And I think that’s one of them that shows California as an island because one of the first (non-native) explorers made that mistake? Then you could tell for a number of years after which mapmakers obviously copied them. Those mapping trips were expensive!

Graphic novels recs!!!

Holy MOLY these are a big hit here. Our 10yo read the heck out of these from ages 6-9, and still often picks them up. (Most of these are series, so I’ve just included one of each!)

"It turns out, mapmakers do have a trick up their sleeve to stop this from happening. It’s a centuries-old method that enables them not only to spot when their work has been stolen, but also, if necessary, to be able to prove it in a court of law."
Did You Know Mapmakers Used to Make Up Fake Towns in Order to Catch Plagiarists?
Mapmaking, if you do it properly, is a time-consuming and money-consuming business. You have to do field surveys and travel to multiple locations, some of which can’t be accessed in a vehicle. You …

Canada can also have that one tiny little piece of Minnesota that juts up into Canada for no fucking reason (Angle Inlet, I think?), and it can have the rest of Oak Island because that place was ruined by the History Channel.

They can also have Point Roberts, because...seriously, mapmakers?
While I'm thinking about it, if we're giving New Hampshire to Quebec, it's only right that we give Vermont to Canada as well.

In return, we'll take New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Seems like a fair trade.

They can keep PEI, though.
NYC + Long Island should also get to be their own state. Maybe let them annex New Jersey. Cut it off at Yonkers.

As for which one gets to keep the New York name, they can battle it out. Loser becomes Old New York.

Mapmakers should replace Florida with “Here Be Monsters”.

Feel sorry for the Syrian mapmakers who can barely keep up, Hama is now completely green as rebels capture the city from Government forces.

For my opinion, Jaquays was one of the all-time great mapmakers and level designers. A natural talent who grasped fundamentals that went otherwise uncodified for decades.

This is how mapmakers work. There's always a fake road in there so they can tell if someone copied it.
