“Get a load of this guy he doesn’t know his lignans from his lignins, total amateur! Hell never make it into tree club now , Haha!”
I was writing something and confused the word lignan, a polyphenol precursor to phytoestrogens, for example in beans that I always have on my mind, when I meant lignin, the rigid cell structure of wood

if that had made it out into the world I would have been dragged on the tree forums so hard

100% of the fossil carbon is from before fungi knew how to handle lignins. They totally know how to do that these days.

i just today learned that the reason the enormously large insects of prehistory vanished was because the super high levels of atmospheric oxygen suddenly declined because fungus developed a new ability/enzyme to breakdown tree lignins that released previously stored carbon into the atmosphere.

Molecular-level characterization of lignosulfonates: high-resolution mass spectrometry approach
Lignosulfonates (LSs), a large-scale by-product of sulfite pulping, are currently the most widely produced and utilized lignin derivative. Like other lignins, LSs are characterized by an extremely complex irregular structure, and their distinctive feature is the presence of sulfo groups in the side chains of the phenylpropane structural units. The present study, for the first time, proposes a mass spectrometric (Orbitrap) methodology for characterizing the chemical composition of LSs based on the use of negative ion mode atmospheric pressure ionization techniques and chemometric approaches to the data treatment. The LS ionization efficiency increases in the series ESI

On the origin of wood.

Andy did a dig into lignin and the convergent evolution of lignins by different plants.

Some day I will have to talk about that more, because it’s so cool.

In the meantime, learn about old trees that sound like dinosaurs and softwood cells!

The cellulose and hemicellulose
are held together by a natural glue called lignin.

Lignins are a key structural material in the support tissues of most #plants. This is because they lend rigidity and do not rot easily.
