A terrible confession from a historian of the FWW in Italy: I kept trying to read it and found it so boring I gave up 😬

I bought and read the book before the podcast (usually do the other way around). Cracking read! So excited for the podcast to hear these gents act it out. So many great stories. I learned so much I didn’t know. #history #WW1 #FWW

Is there a German word for the paralyzing fear experienced by historians trying to write about British strategy in the FWW whilst their copy of David French remains stubbornly hidden and inaccessible in a box of books somewhere. Asking for a friend

Hey Ink, FWW
My #2 is a classic I've been thinking abt for a few days. I lived in Corpus Christi, TX when this was hitting the radio top 10. Had a new baby, a husband I eventually left & I can still feel myself standing in front of the stove singing this along w/LR...tears streaming down my face.

I’m reading the 1921 1916-18 history of 1st Bn Somerset Light Inf. This is the page about their at on the Somme on 1 July 1916. The last complete paragraph is especially poignant.

Haha, I'm 72. I had 3 one day...in a row.
#1 You need to get married. (😬)
#2 You will have a big butt. (honest, it said that! 😵‍💫)
#3 You need to get pregnant. (well, that's impossible🤓)

So FWW...take the blank fortune & do whatever you please. I was entertained by 1 & 2...but 3 went overboard!!

None of the photos seem to have the Spee crest, but at one time the ship was named in honour of a fallen FWW ship.
Photographs from around 1930 show nothing.

The crest painted on the turret is not that of the Königsberg, but that of Admiral Graf Spee.
In FWW, the previous Königsberg was engaged in commerce raiding, but was not part of the Spee fleet, so it is strange why this crest is there.
