On October 11, 1918, Canadian official war photographer William Rider-Rider sent a telegram to the Canadian War Records Office in London. In it, he stated that he had just handed his negatives to the censor of photographs taken in the burning town of Cambrai.

Captain Clarence Jefferies VC was killed on 12th October 1917 leading an attack on a machine emplacement for which he was awarded his Victoria Cross. His body was initially lost but was recovered and identified in 1921.

Vincenzo Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911. He served in the Italian Army in the Great War, was captured by AH troops, and spent two years as a POW.

He died 100 years ago today on 8th October 1925.

This is the Palm King butterfly, Amathusia phidippus. But it was known as Amathusia Gunneryi, named after Herbert Gunnery, a botanist, microscopist, and electrical engineer.

He joined the Army in 1915, aged 33, and served with the Palestine Tank Detachment.

Sick Berth Steward George Trolley was mentioned in despatches by Commodore Tyrwhitt, following a very early naval engagement that took place off Heligoland on 28th August 1914. The Daily Express gave an exciting headline to the battle.

Christy Mathewson aka The Gentleman's Hurler was a professional baseball player. In 1918 he joined the newly formed Chemical Warfare Service & served in the AEF. He was possibly gassed in a trg incident in France in which 8 men died.

He died from TB on 7th October 1925. He is buried in Lewisburg.

On 4 Oct 1917 nr Reutel a sect of tanks from A Bn commanded by Capt Robertson attacked the German line. Assisted by Gnr Cyril Allen he marked routes & when the attack was launched led the tanks on foot. Capt Robertson was killed in the action. He was awarded the VC. Gnr Allen was awarded the DCM.

The Locarno Conference began on 5th October 1925. The main aim of the conference was to secure post Great War borders and normalize relations between Germany and other European nations.

Pte Benjamin Robins, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was killed on this day in 1917. In his school days he played in the Elkington Street Council School football team that won the 1911-12 Aston Villa Cup; just 5 years later he was killed in Belgium.

110 years ago today four Old Edwardians were killed in the Battle of Loos. They were Captain Vernon Newman (pic), Lt Clement Symons (pic), Rfn Robert Vaughan, and Pte Herbert Saxty. And the following day LCpl Albert Bain was killed.
