It’s not an echo of Kay Kavus from the Shahnameh making a flying throne?

Shahnameh, by Ferdowsi; poetry by Saadi, Rumi. Our culture is deeply embedded in kingdoms. Our folk stories told to children. Our thousands of years of kingdoms and creation of civilization.

Every Iranian is Shahzadeh. Try reading some Iranian literature. Shahnameh is one of our most famous pieces of literature. Ever heard of it?

I've received my vol. 1 now! Started reading it this morning.
It's set (at least for now) in the province of Khorasan - which was the area I focused on in my thesis. 🤨
The poet Ferdowsi lived in Tus. He was the author of Shahnameh ("Book of Kings" - I remember reading it in Farsi class!).

The Shahnameh recounts myths, legends, and historical stories popular in pre-Islamic and early Islamic Iran. If you're interested, you can check out the English translation by Dick Davis.

“But all this world is like a tale we hear -
Men's evil, and their glory, disappear.”

#AppreciateADragonDay Persian dragons don't seem to get much attention compared to ones from elsewhere, from what I've read they seem to resemble East Asian ones much more in appearance but were perceived as adversaries rather than benevolently, so more like European dragons.

Iran is still in a total blackout so I continue to make art to raise awareness. I was inspired by the great @mikemignola.bsky.social to do this piece depicting a modern uprising against the corrupt Zahhak from the Shahnameh.

🌍 So, where will we find Alexander next week?

🌍 Alexander’s role in the Shahnameh is to draw the line, literally, between the civilized known world and the terrifying supernatural fringes of society. This is summarized by Alexander building a wall to keep out Gog and Magog, figures from the foundational texts of major Abrahamic religions.

🌍 What curious turn of fate resulted in the inclusion of Alexander in one of Persia’s most instrumental national epics, the Shahnameh of Ibn Ferdwosi? The Shahnameh is a monumental work of 10th & 11th century literature, which records both the mythical and historical Persian timeline.

Garshāsp, who's like the Malachi of the primordial Pishdād dynasty, is not particularly notable except he's last, in the Shāhnāmeh. In Zoroastrianism, Kereshaspa as he's called, straight up murdered a dragon because he thought it was a hill and tried to cook on it and the dragon ruined his lunch

... is protected from decay and thus is told to RISE FWOM YOUR GWAVE and take down Azhi Dahāka aka Zahhak, who's like a three headed devil dragon that's a bit Tiamat and a bit Cerberus and in the Shāhnāmeh, was a human with brain eating snakes on his shoulders and thus a bit Tony Montana.

The Garshāspnāmeh reads like Shāhnāmeh erotic Jamshid fanfiction that leads into some very bizarre Gary Stu-age specifically as an attempt to mog Rostam. Delivered with all the subtlety of Fist of the North Star.

K I've read the Shahnameh but I'm far from an expert on anything Iran despite reading their national epic anymore than I'm an expert about China or West Asia in general for reading some of Journey to the West

They need to do what Iran did with the Shahnameh and just write a whole book full of fake history and fairy tales for people to be patriotic about instead of

Throughout history to today, the most universally binding desire is for high action melodrama, whether it'd be Greek & Indian epics & chivalric romance, westerns & spies, from Shahnameh to Vengeance Trilogy, East Asian action like wuxia & ronin stories to modern shounen action.

I think that's cool
