ICYMI - the latest issue of Gothic Studies journal is devoted to the author, mystic, and media star Algernon Blackwood.

The Intro asks how we can understand Blackwood as an author both in and beyond the Gothic tradition and how his work reshapes the genre.

The folklore of Hookland has every mist, every fog, as danger. Tales of it eating certainty, as a warping infection of the land. Stories of sentient fogs, of even a mist on the common providing a cloak for the Hoarse Hag to walk abroad. – Lou Kemp, Hookland artist, 1981

The algorithms are making it a lot harder to spread the word about these online talks. Although numbers are still reasonable, it would be a great help if folk were able to give the 30 December event a quick share 🙂

I'm not sure why it's flashing like that, but the image contains the CFP for the edited collection @dianearodgers.bsky.social and I are putting together on Folk Horror on Television. We're looking for a wide range of texts, contexts, and academic approaches. Proposals by 15 January.

The Little Owl from
A Third Book of British Birds & their nests by Brian Vesey Fitzgerald. Colour Illustrations by Roland Green.
(Ladybird Books 1959). Beautiful artwork. I have included the delightful text and book cover below. I have never met anyone who dislikes the little owl.

I love the sheer unapologetic awfulness of this. Pudding for a head. Headless goose corpse for a body. Then bottles for peg-legs along with the implements to eat him for crutches. THIS, friends, is Dr. Frankenstein's Christmas miracle.

It's ridiculous that the Government *still* haven't banned the sale of peat.

Peat bogs are still getting dug up and used for compost and in horticulture. Ministers say they'll ban it 'when time allows'.

Get on with it already! Sign the petition:

Sign the petition to end peat sales!
No more delays: Let's get peat out of gardens once and for all. The time for uncertainty has ended.

During the reign of Bloody Mary, several priest-holes were constructed inside magnificent Athelhampton Hall, #Dorset. Centuries later they were boarded up. Sadly, a pet monkey became trapped inside one of them and its feeble scratching to be let out is said to still be heard.
