The patterns you see in your family didn't appear from nowhere.

They were:
→ Once the best response
→ Passed down unconsciously
→ Still active today
→ Changeable NOW

You have the power to recognise and shift them.

I know you're not a Nietzsche fan, but that's the genealogy of morality, isn't it? Leaving aside the so-called historical details of Nietzsche's genealogy, he seems to be on to something about the underlying psychology.

2/ They were psychology majors, and she astutely connected their findings to the psychological importance of understanding family history. This story made me think—if #gardening is well-known for its mental health benefits, could genealogy be another powerful tool for #EmotionalWellness?

(But the wider point, I guess, is that the concept of a 'biography' as an account of a person's life and psychology, rather than a recounting of deeds and their genealogy or as an example of a moral exemplar is quite a modern concept.)

the short version of why I think this stuff is worth reading: they rewrite Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals through Marx’s history of (& as) class struggles to develop a socio-psychology of the formation & operation of the psyche analyzed by Freud. Insane. In like grant applications & public lectures

"'Something must be burned in so as to remain in his memory; only that which never stops hurting will remain in his memory.' This is a principle of the oldest (unfortunately also the most enduring) psychology in the world." - Friedrich Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of Morals

Nietzsche recognizes and rejects only utopian socialism because his genealogy of resentment-psychology examines only preindustrial conditions where the true resction of deeds is lacking and, as Marx agrees, a non-utopian form of socialism is impossible.
Anachronistically put, Marx doesn't reject Nietzsche's Genealogy of ancient morality and early Chrisitanity (which does reject Hegel's). Marx *completes* it with a genealogy of feudalist and capitalist conditions of morality.
In Marx's genealogy, capitalism creates conditions for a class to surmount the resentment-psychology produced by the master-slave dichotomy. But he doesn't deny the threat of resentment psychology or escape Nietzsche's elitism (toward the lumpenproletariat). Marx isn't Nietzsche stood on his head.
