Pediocactus simpsonii, our Mountain Ball Cactus, blooming in a park south of Denver. This is the best specimen I’ve ever seen. These were more numerous before poachers depleted their number. Overseas interest in our cacti drives this threat. #nativeplants

The snowball cactus — Pediocactus simpsonii
I was quite pleased to see this blooming today at Denver Botanic Gardens. As I wrote the Wikipedia article on the species.

Can the base push off the scion?
A few weeks ago purchased these Navajosa, Toumeya and Pediocactus, grafted on frost resistant echinocereus. I am new to grafts on echinocereus, and the fact that these bases are fairly shriveled down worries me a bit. Can I keep them dry until mid march, when the weather starts getting warmer? Or would it be better to take then inside, where I can water them a bit?Thank you all!by Top_Pen_8737

One of my favorite places is just a few miles west of the Columbia in Kittitas Co, and these photos are from last May. I first found my way out there seeking out Pediocactus nigrispinus (basalt cactus), a sensitive population in Washington

The plant in my cover photo is my favorite cactus native to Washington state! Pediocactus nigrispinus grows high up on the semi arid ridge tops in central Washington. They can be difficult to locate, but another benefit of the large wind farms nearby is providing protected habitat for these gems!

This is a Cochemiea species (formerly part of Mammillaria). Pediocactus simpsonii doesn't occur in Arizona, and especially not in the Sonoran desert.
