Pathology language focuses on what others can observe.

The Neurodiversity Paradigm insists that internal experience matters.

If a system defines autism entirely by how inconvenient we are, that system isn’t neutral.

Rather, it’s telling everyone what it’s REALLY about.

What are good therapies for autistic kids who need supports? Well, there isn’t any one answer, because such a diverse group of children couldn’t possibly all benefit from the same approaches. But we have advice, at TPGA:

Well what a fun lunch.
I have just been presented with a delegation from the National Association for the Advancement of Civil Rights for the Under 9’s to discuss ‘Granny’.
Unfortunately, she regards neurodiversity as essentially a wilful refusal to adhere to the rules of Victorian table etiquette.

What with this and the general if uncertain sense that there's too much neurodiversity about, I'm now dreading a return to an undergraduate intake that's too scared to talk about the possibilities of who they are, as opposed to the generally confident and content cohort that's been emerging.

Youngest and I were talking about neurodiversity in our family and I mentioned hers.

"What? No I'm not!"

"The OCD?"

<beat>

"Oh yeah, that."

there is much to be said about the white cis male autistic privilege that gives some autistic individuals different political interests as the rest of us autistic people. part of it is what people in neurodiversity call “aspie supremacy.”

One of the dangers of normalization therapies like ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) is that they can interfere with parents knowing what their autistic kids’ legitimate likes and dislikes—and even personalities—are.

What are routines that give you and yours joy? My autistic son and I have breakfast every week at the same diner. They know us and we don’t have to use menus. They just ask, “the usual?” and the answer is always “yes.”

That’s what ABA taught me a kid.

So it’s so troubling to see autistic adults who speak about neurodiversity and being neuroaffirming say such things.

I understand it, but it scares me - deeply.

It is the exact opposite of all the work that so many of us have been doing for decades.
