Excited to share my postdoc work @olzmannlab.bsky.social! We found lipid droplets, the cell’s lipid storage depots, are subject to oxidative damage and are protected by FSP1. Loss of FSP1 triggers droplet peroxidation and cell death, revealing a new layer of lipid quality control!

FSP1-mediated lipid droplet quality control prevents neutral lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis - Nature Cell Biology
Lange et al. identify a lipid droplet quality control pathway in which FSP1 safeguards stored neutral lipids from lipid peroxidation, thereby preventing the induction of ferroptosis.

📯 shoutout for this beautiful work by Kenji Maeda’s lab, who mapped 300 lipid species across 6 compartiments of humane cells. Besides uncovering general principles of lipid organization, the paper establishes a framework for exploring how lipid landscapes are regulated in physiology and disease 👇🏼

Anyone saying you fat is dumb. Calling people fat in general is dumb, but you are what I think of as “healthy”. I’m 230 at 5’8 and I’m considered “obese” but my blood work and lipid panel is perfect.

Through genome mining and comparative bioinformatics and metabolomics, we illuminate how these triple hybrid systems expand Nature’s biosynthetic creativity. We also discovered the chitinimines, a new family of specialized lipid-containing natural products metabolites from Chitinimonas koreensis.

Ok, I've learned something new - acid fast stains bind nucleic acids and not mycolic acid on mycobacterial cell wall. The lipid-rich cell wall simply prevents acid-alcohol decolourisation, hence acid -fast.

We could not obtain CRISPR mutants for any Marchantia Exo70 (likely essential genes). To circunvent this we designed lipid binding mutants that could act as dominant negative upon conditional expression. Interestingly, Exo70I and Exo70II mutants led to different phenotypes!

For some reason, I thought this was established already.
My lipid panel completely changed afterwards and my doctors (including myself) have always used the female reference ranges. I’d be somewhat anemic if going by male reference ranges.
