The U.S. financial markets, including Treasuries, might be in for a period of substantially heightened volatility with ample of scope for downside surprises. In order to avoid Gilts being caught up in the maelstrom, a sound fiscal policy with sufficient headroom is very much called for.

Macaronage sounds like an incredibly baroque form of money laundering involving French gilts, Swiss shares, and a Cayman Islands low interest savings account.

It’s taken 15 months and the good stuff is creeping out. Labours private school tax is delivering, inflation staying stable/high(ish)- not going up, Gilts are going down, Rayner is ‘back’, children are being prioritised and workers and renters being looked after

👏👏👏 Labour

Gilt sales ~ 300bn pa, UK savers currently about £360bn in cash total. Shift 10% pa from cash to gilts directly could be quite a boost at the margin (probably need to adjust for the the fact that many UK banks probably offset their cash deposits with gilt purchases)

Gilts on track for their best week since April and yields now below where they started 2025.

Global risk-off move, a little bit more priced for BoE rate cuts, and "right noises" on headroom all helping, say investors

Thank you for playing...

It's too late to help with the Budget because of our mad institutional arrangements, but gilt yields coming down is good news. However this framing is ridiculous: these market moves have absolutely nothing to do with hints about renewed austerity from Reeves.

French government debt has a yield 120 bips below that of UK gilts, in every tenor

It’s remarkable that Reeves/Starmer have put so much on apparently being harder working & more honest than Boris (even assuming the latter is true - not sure it is), Sunak was harder working & more honest too

do you mean "reunification in Ireland not for 50 years"?

In European financial circles the UK Union has a life expectancy of less than 10 years now after starmers "EU? not in my lifetime" speech last year.

the 10 year gilt markets reflect that and are worse than when liz truss had to resign!

Yes but it’s only been a year - short of throwing the fiscal rules out of the window and either giving people money or cutting taxes and then collapsing the economy as gilts shoot up it’s not actually logical to expect that to happen in a year

2. The UK’s comparative advantages (and vulnerabilities) are virtually all to do with ‘openness’ - eg strong services orientation eg reliance on non UK buyers of gilts.

If settled status turns into a temporary visa and working migrants leave, the economy is dead.

If it coincides with the impending US tech bubble bursting, it could result in a ballooning national debt to rival the one after WW2.

Bond markets will use UK gilts as toilet paper.
