The extraordinary church at Fotheringhay. A few minutes earlier the sun had briefly come out and it glowed in the landscape, which I didn’t manage to capture. Even in the greyness it’s striking though.

The grand memorial to William Cecil, Lord Burghley, 1598 in St Martin, Stamford. He was the chief adviser to Elizabeth I, an enthusiastic protestant who convinced Elizabeth to order the execution of the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots a few miles from here at Fotheringhay.

Not my normal cemetery, but still Peterborough. Mary Queen of Scots. Beheaded at nearby Fotheringhay Castle on 8 February 1587 (it took two goes with the axe...) she was denied her desired burial in France by Elizabeth.

So her body just kind of lay around in a coffin until she was buried in Peterborough cathedral in the July. Her entrails were said to have been secretly buried at Fotheringhay. James I/VI had her exhumed and buried with Elizabeth in Westminster Abbey in 1612.
