A picture a week for 2025: 41
Traffic in the rain at night in Washington DC. The crossings and buildings create angles and lines, and the headlights and streetlights are reflected in the road.

Also, you wouldn’t want to have got on the wrong side of his son.

211. Skeffington, east of Leicester. William Skeffington (c1465-1535), born here, was at the Field of the Cloth of Gold with Henry VIII, & was later Lord Deputy of Ireland (King’s representative). His son Leonard, Lieutenant of the Tower of London, invented the Scavenger’s Daughter, a torture rack.

Also Kane has now scored more goals for England than Jimmy Greaves and Alan Shearer put together. I’d lost track of quite how far ahead of everyone else he is.

Late stroll. The autumn air pokes my face insistently. An ambulance dances along in blue & leaps the red lights, squealing. The moon finds a lone branch and silhouettes it for me. A red L lies on a verge that is still practising at vergery. The Kettering bus ketters.

127. Kirkby Mallory, NE of Hinckley. Ada Lovelace (1815-52), daughter of Lady (see Fleckney) and Lord Byron, moved here with her mother at a few weeks old. She realised that Charles Babbage’s proposed Analytical Engine could perform a sequence of calculations: seen as the first computer program.

a thing I have just discovered that feels utterly wrong is that Arthur Miller only died in 2005. he could have seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. he could have seen Donnie Darko!

Several hours later and the #Elgar is *still* playing in my head…

Agree with Erica Jeal’s review of the new Tetzlaff Elgar/Adès disc. The Adès is building a significant & deserved discography. The Elgar is quite unlike any other performance I’ve heard - urgent, assertive, at times almost ugly. Not the only way but v glad I’ve heard it.

Christian Tetzlaff: Elgar and Adès Violin Concertos album review – refreshing and exhilarating
The violinist’s performance of these two concertos is energetic but also thoughtful, with the BBC Phil sounding electric

Early late stroll (the sun’s planning to turn in soon). A splatter of moss on a drive. A catwalk of trees poses and shows off ligaments. “11!” shouts the lamppost. A crow pensively surveys developments from its lamppost perch. The pink-tinted clouds seem out of focus.

You might prefer to head to Kirkby Mallory then…

Timings compared to Capuçon’s recent recording with Simon Rattle: Tetzlaff gets through the Elgar in just over 43 minutes, whereas Capuçon (who I don’t think is particularly slow) well over 50 minutes.
Screenshot from the CD booklet showing the timings of the Tetzlaff recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto: total 43.02, with the three movements 15.44, 11.05 and 16.13. Screenshot from the CD booklet showing the timings of the Capuçon recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto: with the three movements 18.36, 12.56 and 19.01 (not shown but that totals 50.33, which is 7.31 longer than the Tetzlaff).

Interested to know whether you’re thinking of any composers other than the obvious ones (Britten, Vaughan Williams, Walton)? - eg Maconchy, Alwyn, Rubbra, Simpson? And do you have any recommendations for particular pieces? Thanks!

Late stroll. Impressionist autumnal flecks lie scattered on a green-screen. No-entry sentries guard the back of the yard. One streetlight is on early, tuning up for the night’s dark performance. A long piece of red string lies on the path, answering an age-old question.

Thank you. One of the most memorable Proms I went to was a performance of the Rachmaninov Vespers (All-Night Vigil) when I was a teenager, for which the arena was empty enough that I was able to lie on the floor and look up at the mushrooms as the music floated ethereally round me…
