It snapped and broke. I sighed, but I wasn’t discouraged. I’d just try again. The next day, I did it again. And again. The bands were weak and broke easily. A small pile of broken rubber bands gathered in the bathroom. I kept meaning to throw them away. Later, just as I was wrapping another band in place, the door burst open. My parents’ voices crashed into the small bathroom—sharp, panicked, calling my name. My hands fumbled as I tried to hide what I was doing, but it was too late. They were already grabbing my arms, pulling them away, asking me what on earth I thought I was doing. I tried to explain. I told them about the television show with the lambs. I told them about my friend. “She doesn’t have one. I don’t want one either.” It was so simple in my head, so obvious; why should I have something wrong with me, why shouldn’t I get rid of it? But my parents didn’t understand. Their voices were hard, their faces confused. They said I’d be going to see a doctor. A special one. I didn’t know how to explain it any better than I already had. All I knew was something was wrong, and I had only been trying to fix it.
