How Do I Get Ability Scores? • There are three methods. • New players should use the Standard Array (PHB p.12): 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. • Intermediate players may use the Point Buy method (PHB p.13). • Advanced players may choose to use the 4d6dl1 method ("roll 4d6, drop lowest 1 roll", PHB p.12). How Do I Assign Ability Scores? • I'll give you specific advice on that in separate videos for each class. • Basically: - You'll choose a class for your character. - You'll assign ability scores based on the default standard array distribution for the character's class. - You'll choose a character race that gives you extra bonuses to your ability scores. Example PC: Half-Orc Fighter Ability Standard Array Racial Bonus Total Mods Strength 15 +2 17 +3 Dexterity 13 13 +1 Constitution 14 +1 15 +2 Intelligent 8 8 T Wisdom 10 10 +0 Charisma 12 12 +1 When Do Abilities Get Tested? • Normal ability checks: Makin anatach or the target being perk called the - Resisting the effect of a spell. The DC Is a special DO called the Spell Save DC of the attacking spellcastel - Resisting the effect of a trap or hazard. The DC is se' either by the DM, or by the publisher, if you're playing a published adventure. • Normally, though, a character's specific skill Is being tested, not their general core ability. Skills • Each ability score (except Con) has some number of skills associated with it. • Skills are like specific, subcategories of abilities. • Each skill is based in an ability & notated as Skill Name (Base Ability)—e.g., Stealth (Dex)- —for easy reterence. • When a situation arises that puts a specific skill to the test, that's called a called skill check. Abilities & Their Associated Skills Ability Associated Skills) Strength Athletics Dexterity Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth Constitution (n/a) Intelligence Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion Wisdom Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival Charisma Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion Skill Proficiency & Skill Checks • If a character is not especially good at a specific skill, that skill shares the same modifier as its base ability. - Example: Half-Orc Fighter isn't proficient in the Stealth (Dex) skill, so they just get +1 to Stealth (Dex) checks. • If a character is especially good at a specitic skill, the game calls that skill proficiency, & adds a proticiency - Example: Half-Orc Fighter is proficient in Intimidation (Cha), șo at level 1, they get +3 to Intimidation (Cha) checks instead of +1. Passive Checks & Perception • Some checks are happening all the time in the background; they're passively (rather than actively) happening. • The most important passive check is your passive Perception (WIS). It's baseline how aware of your environment—& its traps!—you are. Passive Perception (WIS) = 10 + Perception (WIS) bonuses Roll Dice + Mods. Compare to DC. • The base die for all of the checks we've talked about so far is a d20. • Your DM will always ask you for the ability or skill check they want from you. • You will roll a d20. You will add bonuses from an ability or skill depending on what the DM asked for. Specific Roll: Attack Roll • In combat, you'll use the Attack or Cast a Spell actions to attack targets. • The base roll for your attack roll is a d20. • The base ability for your attack roll depends on the weapon ability or the spellcasting ability in question. • Only as an ea bonie is ron aid your protec • Attack rolls are compared against a special DC... Special DC: Armor Class (AC) • Armor Class (AC) measures how hard it is to overcome a target's defenses. • When you attack with a melee weapon, ranged weapon, or attack spell, you roll separately for attacking & damage. • Your attack roll must succeed against the target's AC before you roll for damage. • Your weapon or spell will specific what dice & bonuses to roll for damage. (It will be smaller than a d20.) Special Saving Throw: Death Saves • your subsequent curns arpent pering denscious & saving throws. • A death saving throw is a flat d20 roll. You don't add your Con or other mod to it. • Death Save DC is always 10. • If you succeed on 3 death saving throws while you're unconscious, your character regains consciousness & 1 •If you fail on 3 death saving throws, your character dies.

Ash & Dust Scythe (Finesse, two-handed), Very rare (Requires attunement) Damage. This weapon does 1d8 slashing damage. When you attune to this finely crafted scythe, you are considered to be proficient with it. You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. While attuned to this weapon, your skin becomes pale and your face turns gaunt. You gain advantage on Intimidation skill checks. When you hit with an attack with this weapon, you can choose to do necrotic damage instead of slashing. Ashes to Ashes. If a creature is below half of its hit point total when hit with an attack with this weapon, it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take an additional 4d6 necrotic damage. Dust to Dust. When you hit a creature with an attack with this weapon roll 2d100. If the results of the rolls are the same number, the creature hit with this attack dies instantly and cannot be resurrected by any means other than a Wish spell.

100% this. We rolled 4d6, drop lowest, and that was a shock for digital players. Then we used class advice as the primary driver for stats, backgrounds supporting, species being last consideration. Backwards from what I'm used to, but I get it.

The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. You regain this ability on a long rest.

a) a 2d10 versus d20 roll for a D&D homebrew
b) 4d6 for basic perception checks
c) 5d6 for skill checks

I ran the numbers. I crunched spreadsheets, pondered probabilities....

When I was younger, before smart phones, laptops and tablets were a thing, I used to carry 4d6 in my pocket, cards in my backpacks and bell curves in my wallet so I could approximate polyhedrals. Even the day I graduated and retired, I had dice in my pocket

4D6 drop the lowest, arranged in any order. DND is a game about heroes, not average people. That doesn't make me soft. It means I have preferences that are different from others. Why does it seem like 3D6 down the column are always the hyper macho eager to D-measure how "tough" they are?

Lashing Vines whips out a 30-foot cone of bladed vines. Targets make a Dex save—4d6 Slashing on fail, half on success. Vines ignore cover.

-Draconic Ancestry & Breath Weapon: Can use your action to exhale 15 ft cone of Cold (CON save) once per short or long rest. Saving throw DC is 8 + CON modifier + proficiency bonus. A creature takes 4d6 dmg at lvl 15 on a failed save and half as much on a success.

They’re really great for breaking concentration, but now that I’m looking at 4d6 sneak attack damage (plus d6+5 more for my bow) it just kinda feels bad.

Plus the one time I’ve used it in anger it just drew a Shield spell and did fuckall. My character himself would be like “fuck this staple, gtfo”?
