There’s only one way to explain why questions like “who do NYC voters like for mayor,” and “what do San Franciscans think about George Washington,” become national issues that define the Democratic Party, while genuine Republican extremism with national implications is glossed over as a local issue.
The whole state of Idaho banning all vaccine mandates should be bigger news! If you want your grandmother's nursing home or your daughter's day care to require nurses and teachers to vaccinate, you literally can't! None of them are allowed to require that.

basically a lot of people who have done work in the extremism space have been saying for years that most "extremism" is actually extremely normal people operating in extremely normal theatres and the only exception is that they're willing to take extremely normal opinions just a little farther.
What shocked me most about the death threats sent to teachers in Arizona in recent days was that they didn't come from extremists on fringe platforms, these were sent from seemingly regular people on Facebook.

None of this is to say that *every* example people find of "but why is this account on an extremism list" is down to cloaking and dogwhistles -- there are definitely some maintainers who are susceptible to conflating "extremism laundering" with "dogshit but mainstream opinion", but.
