Torrential rainfall in the Brazilian city of Belem flooded pavements outside the venue for the #COP30 climate talks. Scientists say climate change is making extreme weather events more common.

The 2025 U.N. climate conference, COP30, will run from Nov. 10-21 in Belém, Brazil, and is expected to host the largest participation of Indigenous peoples in the conference series’ history, with more than 3,000 Indigenous delegates registered.

Mongabay spoke with some about their objectives.

It is getting increasingly interesting... Protesters break into #COP30 Conference venue in Belém. They demand an involvement of indigenous and youth groups in the negotiations. They are not at the negotiation desks and they don't have the lobby power that the fossil fuel industry has 🫤

A large country sending zero official delegates is rare... and a deeply weird choice. Governments opposing the UN climate negotiations usually still send delegates, if only to disrupt the process and limit the outcome. Sending nobody allows other countries to control the outcome.

Seeing calls "to keep 1.5°C within reach" at #COP30 and am unsure what to make of them. What would a failure to recognise reality mean? Does it mean we are also not recognising the need to adapt to a 1.5°C world?
