Peter Weir quietly did a filmmaking masterclass at the Biennale this year and I think it would be a shame if more people didn't see it. One of the greatest to ever do it just casually popping in to deliver some wisdom.

Feel incredibly lucky to have hosted a discussion on the weekend with Mark Lee about Gallipoli. It was great to hear his stories from the production and his thoughts on the light/dark sides of the film's long lasting impact.

Development of one of the shots in Flow. Every shot goes through many iterations. In most cases the look is found directly in the 3d scene instead of using concept art. Everything is made in Blender and rendered using EEVEE.

Damn. I had to hear it straight from the horse's mouth before I believed it, but Fincher is indeed directing the Cliff Booth movie. Wild! Very curious!

This right here.

And hey, as someone who covers Australian films, I urge folks to remember that Aussie cinema is more than just Wake in Fright, Mad Max, or Picnic at Hanging Rock.
If you love movies, I am begging you to watch more old movies, foreign movies with subtitles, genres you might think you don't like or aren't familiar with. If you're not doing these things you're missing out on some of the most incredible movies ever made. 🎥 #filmsky

No Other Land just won an Oscar without US distribution. Absolutely legendary for them, this film and its message. The most important award of this year, hands down.

Aussies.

There's a new miniseries starting on SBS very soon called Australia: An Unofficial History. It features clips from a rarely seen early Peter Weir film, Whatever Happened to Green Valley?

Keep an eye out for it. Great stuff.
It’s bullshit that Peter Weir hasn’t won a competitive Oscar for Best Director. That man is full of career-high heaters.

Arts Minister Tony Burke made some remarks earlier this week about Creative Australia’s decision to ditch Lebanese Australian artist Khaled Sabsabi as the pick for the 61st Venice Biennale.

They didn’t get much coverage but I can’t get them out of my head.

So here you go.

Aaron Swartz died because rapacious capitalists insisted that sharing knowledge and ideas — not for profit but to enrich society — was theft. Now we have a whole Silicon Valley industry devoted to undoing artistic copyright, and for what? Fake emails and shitty advertising copy.

Sad about John Marsden, some great YA books and when he got asked about the inherent xenophobia in the Tomorrow series he said he wouldn’t do it again because of how the country has come to treat refugees. Most writers his age just rant about cancel culture. Vale JM.

"Moneyball" (2011).

Look at this amazing shot of the Oakland Coliseum at night, of Beane quietly walking across the field. Now think about it.

This movie is mostly about men arguing in offices and locker rooms. Wally Pfister and his team lit the movie like it was something more.
