My school had one of these posters so I made one for... the internet. Basic online research.
When I was a kid i was basically the only one that used our school's library and so I requested that they order every single first second graphic novel for me, and they did, and I read them all. That also supports authors. If it's physical copies you can totally ask the library to get them for you.
It is more expensive for libraries to buy digital licenses rather than physical copies though. But if you use the digital service to check it out regularly, then the cost is worth it for them.

Sometimes, I buy books only to support the author. I don't even read them. I just want to support a certain kind of story. Usually I keep them for sentimental value.
Also, once the book is purchased. That's basically the end of it's valuable lifecycle. Checking books for quality for donation is very very difficult and thats why most people do not accept donations. Most books essentially are trash paper. So if you don't like a book, it's not bad to throw it away.

Hi, traditionally published author here! We make about $1 or $2 off each regular priced sale, depending on format. The added value is that it encourages stores to keep stocking it, and it keeps bookstores alive, which is huge for us, and sales determine whether publishers offer us more book deals.

Don't worry, this is not true. Libraries, and their digital copies, are still purchased from the publisher. That's why you have to check out digital copies. Each check out is value. Libraries buy bulk (lots of money), that comes from the local government. So checking out is the same as buying.

This is also true. Once the book is purchased, thats it. One purchase. Reselling used books doesn't count. That's also why they are so cheap. It's money thats only going to the seller.
Used books do not directly benefit the author or publisher. Donating used books to your library, or selling them to a used bookstore does encourage new fans, however, who might then go out and buy the author's other books new.

Support independent bookstores always. If you don’t have one near you, you can purchase through bookshop.org and designate any indy store as your “home” store. They will get the credit for your purchase.
Bookshop.org: Buy books online. Support local bookstores.
A better way to buy books online. Every purchase financially supports local independent bookstores.

For authors money, it doesn't matter where it is sold. But for the stores, it matters because they are the store getting your business which pays for the money they spent buying the book. So, you can buy books however you feel is best for you.
I’ve wondered if there is a “best” way to buy a book; retail thru Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or a smaller outlet.

They're all the same. Even going to the library pays authors.
Basically, as long as you didn't pirate it, the author is getting directly paid, usually the same amount.
Do you know if ebooks and audiobooks “count” like buying the physical book?
November 26, 2025 at 1:55 AM
Short answer:
Yes. Absolutely.
Authors get some money every single time you buy or check out thier book at the library. Usually 1 dollar or a few dollars.
Wow I didn't know that. This has inspired me to go to a bookstore.

Do authors typically make money off the books they sell?

Literally buying one copy of a book at your local indie bookstore can mean the difference in whether they buy future books from that author.

This is true because there are so many books.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.

Hey guys sorry to ask but would anyone be interested in a book? I need money for transport to the pharmacy tomorrow to pickup meds & I'd like to get a few groceries too.

Thank you. Sorry to ask for so much, I really do appreciate everyone's help so far with the illness.
I have an art book for #tyreecomic ! It's 62 pages at $10! Not only does it have art but I have some brief guides into my page process as well. There is even stuff I havent released publicly in it! It's a great way to support me currently and get a glimpse into my obsession

The first part though. I think about it whenever someone makes a silly internet joke. Haha
The jokes about how the internet is "just for cat pictures" kinda bug me, because they trivialize this incredible technological achievement that has changed so many lives
