“Never trust a professor who makes their grad students pay for their own food or coffee.” -the immortal Chris Krueger, sending me off to grad school
What’s the most significant advice you received from a teacher?

I had a Geology prof who always said “have strong opinions, loosely held”

Be passionate, assess alternatives with conviction, take sides. But don’t fall so in love with your opinions that you can’t change them with better data.

Girlalala, a 21-year old Black transgender social media influencer, was shot to death Friday in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida.

She was in a car with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Shanoyd Whyte Jr., at the time, and they had been arguing.

I'm editing an anthology about unlikable characters and seeking work from younger writers, 15-21. If you know of one such writer who might want to submit their work for consideration, please share this call for submissions: audacity.substack.com/p/acquired-t...

THIS IS BIG

For non-academics who might not understand why:
1. Sen. Warren is still a Harvard professor so this is a call coming from inside the house
2. As a tenured law prof, Warren knows it is a VERY big deal from a labor standpoint to call on Harvard to ignore tenure. The bar for this is HIGH.
Per CNN, Elizabeth Warren is calling on Harvard to cut ties with Larry Summers after Jeffrey Epstein's emails released last week by House Dems featured Summers making sexist comments + asking for Epstein’s romantic advice.

I wasn't following Kat's campaign before but now I absolutely will.

What a nice viral campaign ad she just created for her enemy.
Yesterday, a Republican tried to give me holy water and Trump perfume because I’m “demonic.”

Extremely normal stuff coming from an extremely normal party.

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated

The federal blitz moved to Charlotte, but the trauma and damage in Chicago are still with us—and DHS says 1,000 agents will hit our streets in March. I wrote about what this moment demands of us: care, clarity, and preparation.
What Now, Chicago? Regrouping After Midway Blitz
Let’s make this a winter of fortification, of learning, and bonding together like the winter snow that federal agents are so afraid of.

Shameful
The irony here is painful.

Alice Wong wrote a column for Vogue called Disability Visibility. You can still find all her writing for Vogue under her author name.

But *Disability Visibility* - also the name of the advocacy group she launched - has been erased.

Exactly how disabled people often are.
The new owners of Teen Vogue have already erased her column.

This being the last post Alice made for herself makes me incredibly sad. We need more spaces for us. We need more places where voices like Alice’s are uplifted so that others can learn from the wisdom that needs to be shared.
It’s been a pleasure working with Lex and everyone in the politics vertical at Teen Vogue. I’m heartbroken that my column, Disability Visibility, is gone. Teen Vogue was one of the few places that published disabled journalists regularly. I just spent the last 2 months working on my next column
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

A few days ago, I saw this lengthy Reddit rant about peer review (sure, valid). It was supposedly someone from Harvard refusing to do any peer reviews to protest the system (hm, less valid).

I did a peer review recently. It took a lot of time. AND it helped me see my work differently. #AcademicSky

i know that there is an overwhelming number of things that we have historically taken for granted and now have to pay attention to and care about all of a sudden, but i am begging you to pay attention to and care about this, too.
NEW: I wrote about attacks on federal oversight of special ed and what it means for families like mine. I went into this thinking maybe MN kids would be ok, but "As I spoke to experts in federal disability education policy, I began to see the cracks."

The cruelty of this order to reverse SNAP distribution is insane.
Republicans are for “state’s rights” when that means promoting segregation and tormenting LGBTQ folks.

When state’s rights means feeding your state’s residents, they are all in for the federal government ensuring starvation.
The US Department of Agriculture has ordered that "states must immediately undo any steps taken to issue full SNAP benefits for November 2025".
