And how much Transportation is hidden in the other categories? What portion of Housing costs is the garage under your apartment building? What portion of Food is the sea of parking surrounding the supermarket? What portion of Healthcare is car-related injury and respiratory disease?
Transportation costs are the second largest burden on American family budgets (17%), after housing (33%)!
To address the affordability crisis, we must create cities with abundant housing of all types (subsidized, social, coop, market rate) and make walking, biking, and taking transit convenient.

I served as our Ambassador in Ukraine for 3 years under Putin’s missiles and drones but resigned when Trump kept appeasing Putin. America does not bow to dictators. It’s not who we are.

Here's why this Trump-Putin so-called "peace plan" is a disaster:

Some costs aren’t costs.

Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

Great question for a webinar: Who owns the street? For decades, the car industry claimed public space for itself and framed this as normal. But the tide is turning — time to rethink our streets. 👉 www.linkedin.com/events/justs...

So true
You can park cars or move people, but you can't do both.
Marnixstraat, Amsterdam in 1980 and today. Not only has the car parking been removed but all the cars have too, now only accessible to those on foot, bike or on the tram

I sometimes roll through a red light, but only when it’s clearly safe. One reason: I want to get ahead of the cars that shoot off at green. Being in front makes me easier to see and helps me stay safer. road.cc/content/news...

There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

A staple of any city bike fleet: the Bahnhofsrad a bike that looks old and a bit rusty, making it seem way too unappealing to bother stealing. I just finished mine . It has parts from at least 4 different donor bicycles. Rusty screws, the frame is scratched and dirty but in generally good condition

At first I thought this was just another driver rant about speed limits being a rip-off, but he’s right: Uniform lower limits make sense: 30 km/h in dense urban areas, 50 km/h in less populated zones, 90 km/h on open roads. Plus: invest in safer intersections. www.derstandard.at/story/300000...

@brenttoderian.bsky.social That is why Ford created the F650. Helps men feel they have a bigger than others. The 150 is such a small compact car now 😉

A strategy based solely on incentives is no longer sufficient to address the problems that come with the dominance of cars in our transport system. Beyond expanding alternative mobility services (Carrots🥕) we must also ensure that less sustainable options become noticeably less attractive (Sticks👎)
Statistisch erwiesen:

Most politicians ignore the massive costs of car-centric mobility and still pretend pushing cars is somehow a win for society. Meanwhile, the proven benefits of active mobility get dismissed and every cent invested is scrutinized. Feels like a severe case of #CarBrain gripping our collective mindset

Great that Volvo is innovating for more pedestrian and cycling safety. These features should become mandatory for every truck that wants to enter populated areas.
In tight spaces or heavy traffic, it’s not always easy to see who’s near. Active Side Collision Avoidance Support uses radar to detect cyclists or pedestrians on the sides. If someone’s there, it warns you or even steps in to brake if needed so you can keep others safe, even when visibility is low.

Vienna is finally considering action, higher parking fees for oversized SUVs are a long-overdue step to stop the flood of bloated vehicles clogging our streets. They not only steal public space, they endanger everyone outside their wank-panzer shells. About time!

Cyclists and pedestrians aren’t the problem, unsafe, car-centric streets are. Blaming people on bikes or on foot for “low visibility” ignores poor lighting, bad design and zero enforcement for drivers. Fix the system, not the most vulnerable. www.derstandard.at/story/300000...
