We could also address this with technology if the people controlling the resources for technological development weren’t using them to make nonce machines.
Leftists address this constantly. We advocate for universal health care and child care, guaranteed pensions, decommodified housing, and all kinds of other things that would directly address these issues. What we don't do is say "more white babies" which is what is really being asked here

The US and other countries face aging, shrinking populations. Conservatives have shaped debate over the issue. Some liberals say it's time for progressives to weigh in. n.pr/3NH3yso

Dilbert was very much a right wing "Bullshit Jobs" guy - basically, office based jobs which you can't easily explain to a 7 year old are emasculating and gay. Graeber and Scott Adams would have found a lot of common ground.

One of those works of art that I absolutely love but can’t begin to explain why.

“This is where it starts to get serious”, says Bill Leslie. Whereas for the last 19 games Mikel Arteta has been a model of easy going frivolity.

Thinking about the link between awful politics and militant (or at least, very forcefully expressed) animal rights activism after Brigitte Bardot’s death - see also Gervais, Morrissey. Probably because I’m at London Bridge and there are fucking dogs everywhere.

Disintegration is objectively a better album but this is my favourite for personal reasons. RIP Perry.

Getting truer by the week. But it’s still not made the Owen Jones/Zara Sultana “but what about Kiosks?” video any less funny
There are people on the left who are mad and annoying and talk shit, and they represent 2-5% of the social media posts you see. Then there are people on the right who are mad and annoying and talk shit, and they occupy almost every position of power on the earth.

Might just need to hack into the England Band’s account and start posting anti-Trump stuff.
At the World Cup this year someone needs to tell ICE that the England Band are Mexican nationals and their visas aren’t in order.

Recently switched jobs from a private company to a public institution and everything’s more complicated. Because you’re doing varied things for a body with varying aims and far more interested parties. You’re not just doing a specific thing to make money for the people that own it.

“You can sort the bill out then.”
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

When Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me came out, I was a snotty teenage indie clot who would roll his eyes at almost anything vaguely “mainstream”. Except this song, because it was fucking superb.
In this strongly pro-George Michael space, tell me, what are your Top 5 Wham!/George tracks

I wonder whether this lot are going to fulfil the same function as West Street in Brighton - keep all the tiresome nutters in one area and away from the rest of the city - for the Green Party.

Doing the "making everything about my personal hobby horse" thing, but this was particularly the case during Covid where the government reduced all its comms to three word slogans, and the opposition continually complained that The Rules were too complex and confusing.
I don't think it's all of it by any measure but I do absolutely believe that the political media's raging anti-intellectual streak has got worse with time and has ended up influencing the way MPs talk, and what they choose to talk/think about
I don’t think this is a “politicians have got dumber” issue for the most part. If you look at the *actual CVs* of previous cohorts of MPs, their background is not radically different when you account for, you know, the fact the economy is different! It is primarily a media and ecosystem issue.

Is there anything that prevents one from telling these people to fuck off and walking away? Presumably they don't have the power to physically detain people. It presumably just incentivises going after people who are too timid or baffled to just leave.

Live action Race For Your Life Charlie Brown. Maybe with Christopher Nolan as director.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

On #worldchildrensday a report is issued in the UK on the government’s appalling treatment of children during the pandemic. Condemned by large numbers of people who, at the time, were arguing it wasn’t harsh enough.

Made a wardrobe mistake this morning, the heating at work was slightly off and so I never got warm all day. But at least these fuckers have got another seven months of the weather they want.
Is it too much to ask for hayfever sufferers to just take some antihistamine and shut the fuck up for the five minutes where the weather is actually nice in this country?

Amazing, given how underwhelmed the country was when he won the election, that Starmer hasn’t even managed to live up to those low expectations.

Who was the last British politician to talk to the public like they were grown ups? Gordon Brown? I can’t think of many.
Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.

London is a city that I’ve never liked and always does my head in whenever I go there but now I feel obliged to defend the place and well…yeah. I’ve never felt particularly unsafe there. Irritated, confused and overwhelmed yes, but not unsafe.
