The COVID wastewater levels near me were higher this month than at any point during the holiday season last year, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet.

On top of that, the current flu vaccine does not protect against the new K variant, which caused a record flu season overseas.

Mask up!
Patient came in with sore throat. While waiting for rapid Strep test result we glanced back at the Covid-19 RAT result: positive. Reminder that masking in health care makes sense, if you don’t want everyone in your waiting room to go home sick, your staff to get sick, and physicians to get sick.

“All across this country [people] have sacrificed and fought and died for their rights in the workplace. The times and the characters may change, but that story never ends. It’s only picked up by the next writer... Take our pen and hold power to account.” 🔥🔥🔥

I really try to avoid Substack (and never give money anymore) but this interview is one of the most thoughtful, validating, clear-eyed conversations about the current state of publishing that I've read to date.

Come for the romantasy hot takes, stay for the cultural value of literary criticism. 💙📚

Delete your Twitter account. That platform is built for right wing propaganda and harassment and that's it.
I wrote about the fake account blowup on X this weekend. A genuine post-truth nightmare and proof that these companies have polluted their platforms so thoroughly and traded reality for profit that they've undermined the very idea of what the internet is supposed to be.

You cannot respect artists at a fundamental level and steal their work.

Sorry, but that's why we hate AI.

Libraries pay for books. There are 17k public libraries in the US. 90k school libraries. If even a small percent of those each buy a book, that helps out considerably financially.

In Canada, libraries pay the author PER BORROW.

A lot of books on internet archives were stolen to begin with...

Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

Quick reminder that anarchist bookstores are among the only third spaces that reliably take COVID precautions, require masks, etc., to make themselves safe for disabled and immunocompromised patrons.

I wrote for @theintercept.com about how prosecuting transportation of these pamphlets is a danger to all writers, journalists, and Americans.

Possession of words is not a crime, even with intent to distribute.

Fun fact: there were multiple originals of that FDR portrait made by the artist. One of them can be found a bit closer to Mamdani--at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society in Manhattan.

I love this interview and the parallels between what he discovered as a historian making a thing and realizing all the little decisions a weaver makes in the process, and all the many things DH staff know about doing projects that just don't get written into the record of scholarship. #DHmakes

Excellent alternatives to ULINE for your holiday shipping needs:

- Chicago Box Company
- EcoEnclose
The problem has been, there hasn’t been an elsewhere (which is why uline is so rich). Has this changed recently? Bc every article I’ve ever read in 30 years about how bad Uline is has not been able to suggest a worthwhile alternative

Beginning Monday, a Frozen Peppermint Hot Chocolate drink will be available exclusively at Starbucks cafés inside Target stores.

The chains are hoping the drink can drum up excitement from customers this holiday season.

Just watched a dog find and proceed to drag home a ten-foot-long stick(!) on his evening walk. Went across the crosswalk and down the street and everything.

Well done, doggo. Well done.

Well it seems it is going to be to late for @lastweektonight.com to help with their hiatus. Any suggestions for a big sci com/science interested news account I should play with to help save PRI?

Tag them in the comments with your pitch for why they should help out this museum maybe
