Make that 45 years. When people were buying up Japanese cars in the ‘80s, American car makers begged Reagan to put tariffs on them so they could get their footing. When tariffs hit the Japanese, Americans just raised their car prices and kept making crap while the Japanese built their cars here.

Tariffs are showing up on your bill hidden in the price of products that are significantly higher now than they were before tariffs. Imported agricultural machinery cost more. Businesses aren't taking the big hits; they're passing most of the tariffs to customers/consumers.
