"ouuuggh SCROMIT! I hate forced diversity in stories!" is a big rallying cry of choads nowadays, but the Lagoon company in Black Lagoon is notable for its diversity in characters, and I am sure that was a conscious decision by Sunao.
It also talks in small part about racism and how inhumanely westerners treat East Asian people (Shenhua and Revy's whole character arcs pay heavy attention to the latter).
Black lagoon is in large parts a critique of western imperialism and capitalisms inhumanity. (And generally how fucked large intelligenceagencys are, and their paralells to comoanies, and both of their similarities to organised crime.)
