I don’t really think CR has anything to do with this. It’s scary for anybody to try a new thing especially something like D&D where you’re being watched by other players.
This take is like saying singers made karaoke performative, you don’t need to find something to blame for people being nervous.

I hear folks afraid to try, worried they wouldn't be "good at it."
