🪶 A spotted towhee decided this was a good branch while I was looking out for birds of prey. This is the best shot I got of the striking red eye but it takes a 100% crop to see.
A tree with branches generally going from lower left to upper right. The largest branch has a bird sitting on it facing away from the camera. The bird is the size of a large sparrow and has a red and white underside, dark tail, spotted white and black wings, and a black cap. It's left red eye is barely visible. A 100% crop of the other image showing that the image is slightly blurred/doubled. The red eye and black pupil are visible in the center of an image of a spotted towhee bird showing part of the head, eye, and a white spot on the wing looking from the top to the bottom of the image.

🪶 A couple of starlings drew me in to take a shot and when I downloaded the image I realized that most of the woodpecker holes have acorns in them! Some busy creature has taken advantage of the storage.
2 starlings (dark, black, iridescent, speckled birds about 10 cm tall) sit atop a dead tree, stripped of its bark and broken with tens of woodpecker holes visible and the majority of them have a single acorn in them. Some larger holes have more than one acorn!

Realized today that it's been a hot minute (OK, 7 months) since I've posted any nature photos so here's a chrysalis! I had to move this one a few feet to keep it safe so it's tied up with some thread.
Green chrysalis tied with white thread to a green stalk across the top of the image. The chrysalis is hanging vertically. The chrysalis is lighter green than the stalk and has black speckled across the top third that is in focus. About a quarter of the way down is a nubbly line that almost goes all the way around. The line is gold on top and black on the bottom and appears to be very thinly white where the 2 other colors meet. Out of focus in the bottom quarter of the chrysalis 3 golden dots can be seen in an arc from the top dot on the left to the bottom dot on the right 10% of the way from the bottom.

ok so i got some *more* constructive criticism from bird artists on my attempts at drawing birds. many said the legs weren’t realistic enough and i suspect they were right. i think i finally got it in this year’s calendar though, lemme know what you think

This sounds better than too much social talk into standups. I'm not opposed to some, especially as it feels like the only opportunity some people have as a relief valve, but having to gently keep the meeting on topic to respect group time pains me because I want people to have social growth too.

ramblings: a tip for remote teams of 2-10 people
A tip for remote teams of 2-10 people. Create a personal “ramblings” channel for each teammate in your team’s chat app of choice. Ramblings channels let everyone share what’s on their mind without cluttering group channels. Think of them as personal journals or microblogs inside your team’s chat app, a lightweight way to add ambient social cohesion. People typically post short updates 1-3 times per week. Common topics include: - ideas related to current projects - musings about blog posts, articles, user feedback - “what if” suggestions - photos from recent trips or hobbies - rubber ducking a problem Each ramblings channel should be named after the team member, and only that person can post top-level messages. Others can reply in threads, but not start new ones. All the ramblings channels should be in a Ramblings section at the bottom of the channel list. They should be muted by default, with no expectation that anyone else will read them. We started experimenting with ramblings at Obsidian two years ago, and they’ve been surprisingly sticky. We have no scheduled meetings, so ramblings are our equivalent of water cooler talk. We want as much deep focus time as possible, so ramblings help us stay connected while minimizing interruptions. Because they are so free and loose, some of our best ideas emerge from ramblings. They’re often the source of feature ideas, small prototypes, and creative solutions to long-standing problems. About once a year, we do a week-long in-person meetup. Ramblings have been one successful way we keep the human connection going throughout the rest of the year.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

A favorite piece of airport art from Boston Logan for #inverteFest

a riso-style illustration of some mushroom soup ingredients. included this image for extra alt text room. ingredients here, directions on the next slide BROTHY MUSHROOM SOUP 4-6 bowls (depending on the size of your bowl!) 60-90 min INGREDIENTS Butter (roughly 1/4 cup) Garlic (lots) Onion Mushrooms (a couple containers) Chicken or Veggie stock (1L carton) Salt/Pepper Wine (a splash) Parsley/Rosemary/Thyme/Bay Leaf* Lemon juice or Tomato paste Parmesan (a sprinkle) This is a nice garlicky mushroom soup that is nice to eat with a buttered slice of sourdough toast. (continued on next image) 1. Throw a chunk of butter (i don’t know, a few tablespoons or something) into a pot with a chopped onion and a few cloves of garlic on low heat. 2. Let that simmer on low for a while. In the meantime, cut up a couple little containers of mushrooms (I used crimini but regular ol' white button mushrooms are great), maybe unload your dishwasher or give your floor a quick sweep. 3. Toss in your mushrooms, and heck, some more butter, why not? The mushrooms are just gonna soak it all up anyway. Maybe some more garlic, too. Maybe some green onions if you have some you want to get rid of. It don't matter none. 4. Let that simmer on medium heat until the mushrooms are soft. If you have it, throwing in a splash of wine would be delicious. White or red, it doesn't matter. Season with some salt and pepper. 5. Dump in about a litre of chicken or vegetable stock, then season with more salt, pepper, and maybe some rosemary, parsley, thyme.. All good options. I also recommend a few drops of lemon juice or maybe a little spoonful of tomato paste. 6. Taste it before and after adding each ingredient to see how it's coming along and try to balance as you go. Shucks, add another pinch of garlic powder. A sprinkle of parmesan can be good too. 7. Simmer until you get impatient, and then put it in your mouth hole. *I recently tried it with Tarragon because my Mother-in-Law's yard is being consumed by her wildly successful tarragon bush and wouldn't you know it, it was GREAT. Highly recommend.

Update on my life: Last year, I joined my kids' school's PTA, because they needed a treasurer and I'm good enough with numbers. It was a straightforward, self-contained job: balancing the checkbook for an organization that only did a few fundraisers each year.
