When I was a kid, the only Native representation I saw in cartoons was A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special.

I made Pow! to show that modern, funny Native characters deserve to be seen too. Watch us on FNX. If you like it, review us on @letterboxd.social and tell your friends!

"To see if you are civilised enough, if you can act like a human being."

Disgusting dehumanization of Indigenous people. Eye contact can't determine someone's ability to parent! Nor do any of the questions Keira talks about! FKU test also includes an ink blot test

Slowly but surely, word of mouth for Train Dreams is spreading. Unlike many other films this prestige movie season, it returns to my thoughts regularly. It's a grower!

Train Dreams is worth watching when it comes out on streaming. I should have brought tissue paper. Beautiful film and one of my favorites this year.

Extremely sad to hear of the death of Nakadai Tatsuya, one of the great actors in cinema. I was honored to bring him to Yale in 2016 (photo), interview him on camera, and visit his acting school Mumeijuku. He was supremely devoted to the act of acting and will be sorely missed.

I can't get this film out of my head. It's just gorgeous and heartbreaking at the same time. The hardest thing about growing up is that people or stories you idolize aren't what you think they will be.

This isn't unusual here in the US, or in Mexico, as folks have used the holiday to bring awareness to community problems through social protest. From Chicanos bringing awareness to gang violence back in '73 to remembering those who died in ICE custody and from COVID-19 it's part of the heritage.

A reminder, if you need something to read for Hallowe'en.
Someone asked:

"So... public domain cosmic horrors that aren't Lovecraft. What do we got?"

The tradition that gave us Lovecraft & co. is rich and deeply weird. While they aren't all cosmic horror, they all informed it.

So. 1 like = 1 public domain weird story that isn't by H. P. Lovecraft.

Because anti-trans sports bans inaccurately define sex as a narrow binary, many intersex people are prevented from experiencing the joys and other benefits that come from athletic participation.

Everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves and play the sports they love.
How trans sports bans threaten intersex athletes like me
If I was competing in high school or college athletics today, I would have much more to worry about than just being teased for looking different.

I am glad that I've taken the chance and watched Pupi Avati's L'arcano incantatore (Arcane Sorcerer) for AFI Fest. I enjoyed the way the supernatural and uncanny were presented in this film. My gut feeling of "since you like History of Magic and Religion you should give this film a try" paid off.

Ok, so let's talk a little bit about how the Romans understand magic and why they think putting phallus-shaped objects (fascina, sing. fascinum) are witch-craft related and how that connects to our word 'fascinate.' 1/
Hmmm: Borrowed from Latin fascinātus (“to enchant, bewitch, fascinate”) [makes sense so far] from fascinum (“a phallus-shaped [lol wut] amulet [wait what] worn around the neck [WHAT THE TARPEIAN FUCK] in Ancient Rome; witchcraft”) ... itself of obscure origin.

Don't use what's happening to Indigenous people in Alaska to get "orange man bad" points in social media and actually do something.

In all my years I've never seen a majority of these people care when the land is destroyed or they threaten to bring harmful mining and pipeline under Dem presidents

A reminder that Coca Cola with Cane Sugar is still unhealthy. Both contain glucose and fructose. There is not much difference. The same cane sugar product has affected the country's health with you guessed it, diabetes and obesity.
