I wasn’t familiar with Jordan Harper’s work prior to this banger of a short story. I immediately went out and got his short story collection Love And Other Wounds and devoured it. Working my way through his novels now. Don’t make the same mistake. Highly recommend anything this guy does.
"When I was a senior in high school, my biology teacher murdered his entire family and got away with it. I’m going to lie to you about it now, but first I need you to understand this much: he did it. He killed them all, and in the end they let him go."

That sounds a lot like this book albeit with a different title. The Devil Thumbs A Ride features the same intro by Ed Gorman and Dow Mossman. It reprints all(?) of Gifford’s film review columns from Mystery Scene magazine. I can attest that it’s well worth the time of any fan of noir films.

I think my wife subconsciously adopted the Patty McCormack character as a role model as a child. We made it through 45 years together despite this obvious character flaw.
Tonight @mzspress.bsky.social and I watched The Bad Seed (1956) on @svengoolieofficial.bsky.social. Great timing, building a new episode around a movie that asks, "Are some people just born evil?"? Stagey but well-done. It got 4 Oscar noms, 3 for the performances, which are strong across the board.

I won’t be watching this after this announcement even though it’s a marquee matchup. Great job of alienating fans USTA.
What the actual fuck.

Norm Partridge is a damn good writer who hasn’t been writing much recently. He had a new story in the overlooked anthology The Drive-In Multiplex. He was white hot in the late 90s & early 00s. Have a feeling we will be see some new work from Norm when he retires from his day job shortly.

Damn don’t we all feel this way to an extent? But life is a journey, you wouldn’t be the person you are today without going through the shit of early times. Myself I was in my 30s until I realized what made me an angry fearful shit. Like the movie Defending Your Life, you need need to beat fear
Looking back on when I was 18 to 22, my college years, I can’t overstate how much I wish I could completely redo all that. I’ve been so ashamed of the things I said and did during that time that I can’t even remember all of it. I was a disgrace, and I had misspent my youth.

Yesterday’s book mail. Being a collector/fan of Bloch’s since I was 12, 58 years ago, I ripped into this last night. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about Bloch but there are nuggets of info in this I was unaware of. Keep in mind though this not a biography. A must have for Bloch fans

Trump is reported to want to sue over South Park saying he has a tiny penis.

That would be funny for two reasons:(1) discovery; and (2) truth is an absolute defense in defamation actions.

Going to the bank tomorrow to get some cash and reward this young man for his good deed. There are still some honest kind folks in this world, although you wouldn’t know it from watching the news. Faith in mankind restored if just for a day.

Moving mom into assisted living. The thought of getting a new phone , canceling credit cards, new drivers license, Medicare card etc was not what I needed with everything else. Some young man found everything in the street and was kind enough to bring it to my neighbors since I wasn’t home. 2

To make up for my oversight in not mentioning Ed Bryant in my earlier post, here are some photos of at the LittleBookshop of Horrors. The 1st shows Fan Simmons, Steve Rasnic Tem and Melanie Tem waiting in line at his book signing. Next is Nancy Collins with Ed and Doug Lewis. Finally Ed’s 50thbd

Wasn’t thinking. It was criminal of me not to mention Ed Bryant in conjunction with LBH. He had his hand in everything. The readings, the chapbooks all of it. He was master of ceremonies for the readings. His reading of A Sad Last Dinner at The Diner Of Dead was unforgettable.
Number 2 was a smaller but no less important place. The much missed LittleBookshop of Horrors in Arvada, Co. Run by Doug & Tomi Lewis it was a clubhouse for CO writers and fans. And the readings/signings they sponsored. Joe Lansdale, Ellison, Morrell, Nancy Collins, Lucy Taylor & more Epic epic

Don’t know what I was thinking but it was criminal of me not to mention Ed Bryant in conjunction with LBH. He emceed every reading. Acted as a liaison with writers to set up readings. Consulted on chapbook publishing. I’ve been to hundreds of readings an Ed was one of the best.
