I grew up in a household that was always playing Indian and Pakistani music - from popular stuff like Bollywood soundtracks, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ravi Shankar to obscure LPs my dad owned from old artists I can't even remember - so when I hear a tabla, it reminds me fondly of my childhood.
And this is why the tabla is my most favourite instrument ever, ever, ever! Used across all of South Asia, it is a key part of both Hindu & Sikh devotional music as well as in Muslim Sufi compositions and has featured regularly in some western music & films too
