The stunning goldcrest is so tiny it weighs just five grams – about the same as a 20p coin!

It may be the UK’s smallest bird, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in high energy. Goldcrests flit through tree branches, rarely staying still for more than a second.

Out with the team today doing our main rose pruning session. We’ve moved to a single prune in autumn, as the warm winters allow the roses to start growing as soon as it warms up in early spring.

We needed a real growth budget, and this wasn’t it.

With the temperature consistently low, it’s time to give the yew hedges a final trim so they are neat and tidy over winter.

Both of these I grow, but I must confess with shame that the red chokeberry was unfamiliar until someone recently brought me a branch. It flamed as red as a cherry. I think it probably ought to be planted in a clump, say half a dozen— #gardening

Cost of extending the fuel duty cut plus cancelled uprating next year: £2.4 billion.

Cost of freezing rail fares next year: £145 million.

Sixteen times more expensive to maintain the fuel duty cut/freeze than to freeze rail fares

Imagine how much fares could be *cut* by ending car fuel subsidies.
