Greetings, BlueSky. Who am I and why am I here? Short version: I'm an American thriller novelist with a lifelong interest in the culture and history of the Middle East, a former conservative who has been politically homeless for nearly a decade, and who prefers his social media with fewer Nazis.
"Having emerged from its trial by fire, the wartime generation was convinced that it had been called to lead the nation. Its mission consisted specifically of bringing the education received at the battlefront back to the home front, where people remained stubbornly ignorant. 1/3

My wife has been trying to remedy my Disney movie deficit ever since we got married. . .

Tonight was "101 Dalmatians" and I realized I'd been immersed in Mick Herron's world for too long when I laughed a little too hard at the line, "Regent's Park--it's an all dogs alert!" 🤣

It's hard to overstate what a disaster Kash Patel is. See the many disturbing details here, from @vermontgmg.bsky.social, an expert on the FBI. "The longer this chaos continues," he writes, "the more likely we’re going to face a catastrophic intelligence failure." www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

The most awkward part of visiting a Commonwealth country like New Zealand comes when you politely ask someone if they speak English. . .

And they explain that they "bloody have been." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am looking for solid resources on the Knights Hospitaller covering their activities at Malta in the 16/17th centuries, particularly focusing on their corsair/anti-corsair operations. Does anyone have any recommended reading to suggest?

It's "reek," Vance. Not "wreak."

For further context, that's the name of a Game of Thrones character you resemble.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Many focusing on the hubristic blasphemy of “we’re saving God”—and fair enough—but also, Kaepernick?

All he did was exercise his 1A right to expression in a calm, quiet, unobtrusive way. And he last played Jan. 1, 2017!

How lacking in real problems that this was ever a grievance, let alone still.
Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."

Knowledge creation steady and clearly visible.
