It's "reek," Vance. Not "wreak."

For further context, that's the name of a Game of Thrones character you resemble.

Making my review debut on @spybrary.bsky.social today with my thoughts on David McCloskey's latest thriller. Brilliant read, I can't recommend it highly enough.

On a lighter--in some ways--note: my friend John Bruning's book "Indestructible," the absolutely incredible story of Pappy Gunn.

I'd also add Jonathan Shay's "Achilles in Vietnam" as a book I was recommended by a friend who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. A provocative look at what ancient literature might tell us about humanity in combat.

Karl Marlantes' "What It Is Like to Go to War" is a classic for a reason. Not an easy read, but a very thought-provoking book.

As pro-MAGA as the Bee has become, I'm actually shocked they ran with this.

Perhaps there's still some chance that this coalition implodes before they succeed in destroying the country.

So, we've now arrived at the point where "conservatives" endorse deploying literal Nazis onto American streets to combat their supposed "crime emergency."

These people are deranged.

I'm a couple days late, but I must congratulate @isabelcanas.bsky.social on her latest release.

I read her first two books over the summer, and they're two of the most striking and memorable novels I've read this year, suffused with a rich sense of history.

Can't wait to dive in.

Some days, you get to check something off your bucket list that you didn't realize was even on there.

In this case, chasing balloons while riding shotbun (yes, that's a thing) in the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile.

My wife and I had a fantastic evening out in Livingston last night, enjoying a show with Fred Newman, for decades the incredible talent behind the sound effects on A Prairie Home Companion.

A brilliant, riotously funny performance.

You know your sense of style leans toward the vintage when you're on the greeting team at church and a man in his seventies compliments you on your hat with the words, "I remember my dad having one like that."

"Is your career worth your life?"

"Didn't Belinda always complain that my career is my life?"

Sandbaggers is such an intelligent, beautifully written show. I regret not watching it earlier.

I started reading Milton Mayer's "They Thought They Were Free" over the weekend, and he makes an interesting point, that when he interviewed people in small town Germany in the 1950s, virtually none of them had any concept of the previous two decades that matched up to the American one.
