According to Blanqui's newspaper, 'Neither God Nor Master', the phrase was a play on Auguste Comte's earlier "sans dieu ni roi", "without god or king." Neither Blanqui nor Comte were anarchists but anarchists later took up the phrase. A Cree text from the 1880s used the phrase "no ruler no master."

Kent State does provide a good point of comparison for this moment because it, too, was not the first incident of its kind. It was the first time the victims were white which sparked more widespread outrage and political action than was ever offered the victims of the Orangeburg Massacre.

Normally, I prefer to commemorate birthdays rather than deaths, unless the death was directly due to state repression, but in this case, it's nice to remember that he lived to a nice old age of 95.
