Just for the fun of it, I coded and posted Jensen's Device to my class today. (We are now in the non-SMoL part of the course. Miss conventional eager evaluation yet?)

Oh, of course I write my Algol code in @racket-lang.org , don't you?

Note that if it's happening in the Fediverse it is ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY happening here on Bsky.
Since 15 Sept IFTAS has tracked a network of over 300 Mastodon accounts engaged in a high-volume propaganda campaign, promoting pro-Russian narratives:

I still stand by these, even as universities around the world, including my own, brainlessly capitulate to AI.
As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity.

TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

Regretfully (for the sake of the authors and journal staff), I have this morning declined an invitation to review for a @royalsociety.org journal because of the Society’s continued refusal to stand up for its values in dealing with Elon Musk FRS.

I know I shared this story many times in many ways and places, but once, when I was a young grad student, at a conference where there were about 100 men and only a handful of women...
One of my earliest moments of radicalization was in 2005 when Larry Summers said that women biologically have less aptitude for science than men. Following that, scores of equally unimpressive people wrote pieces trying to explain or justify his remarks, when they should have called for his removal.

I think that Swift is an awesome language for functional programming! Many (functional) programmers don’t seem to know this. Hence, I gave talk about “Functional Programming in Swift” at @bobkonf.bsky.social — it is now online: media.ccc.de/v/bob11-2024...

This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

Idiom Origin

“pull yourself up by your bootstraps”

This was originally *sarcasm* & meant to convey that the act was impossible.

A boot strap is a loop used to help put your boot on.

This 1921 cartoon from the “Nonpartisan Leader” showcases that you can’t pull upward on your boots to levitate.

This is your routine reminder that "program" and "algorithm" are not synonyms. A program *goes*; an algorithm *works*.

They try to pull a fast one on you by overdignifying shit programs as "algorithms". They don't work. They're not algorithms. They're wrong, not you.
