I've been on Facebook a little more recently. I've been complaining about local issues. I'm becoming One Of Those People.

But anyway. Oh my god Facebook is a nightmare. How do people cope on there? Just non-stop slop.

What makes LLMs work isn't deep neural networks or attention mechanisms or vector databases or anything like that.

What makes LLMs work is our tendency to see faces on toast.

Arguments that “LLMs make mistakes and slop but so do humans!” just don’t land for me.

Because yes, if given the choice I’d much rather it still be humans making that slop and those mistakes.

Why, why, why?! Does Notepad need to have a Co-pilot implementation. It is Notepad. It exists to have no features.

The whole point of Notepad is that it doesn't do anything but text.

A lot of pro-AI people will be like, “This technology constantly makes mistakes and adds unneeded steps to work, but you’ll have no choice but to use it for every facet of your life whether you like it or not” and then furiously wonder why some folks aren’t instantly on board with the pitch.

look, when a startup founder says "you don't need to scale!" it means they're trying to sell you a database

if they say "it's a revolutionary way to write apps" they mean it's per request billing

If you think LLMs are "good enough" as they are, then the only thing I can say is I hope you're right, because at the moment it looks like tech is trying to bake a broken toy into every aspect of our society in the belief that the only thing that actually "breaks" tech is regulatory interference

Playing the new Doom and it’s great but I do feel a *little* overwhelmed with the number of new ways I can hit monsters.

Almost like guns are an afterthought. But Doomguy *is* the angriest man alive so it kinda makes sense. It’s still a fantastic game.

I like checking clearsky.app from time to time to see who I've been blocked by and what lists I'm on. Because I do believe that to make an impact you unfortunately end up annoying some people.

It seems I'm currently not being annoying enough. Must work on that.

Kicking off another exciting week of *checks notes* web stuff..

WordPress and Laravel mostly over the next few days. I've been doing more on my own site too, mostly front-end interactive shenanigans. Always so easy to get distracted by that though! Need to focus more on content a bit more there.

anime.js is a JavaScript library I've been using recently to make web designs pop, give them the "wow" factor (insert other cringe buzzwords here as appropriate) - it's pretty cool!

Anyway, here's 12 examples of what you can do with it.

This is cool! A gradient generator with a twist (or warp) - make fancier gradients for all sorts of use cases.

Read a post by someone doing that obnoxious thing where they try to upset you with an emotive hook?

“Hey! Here’s why you’re failing! You suck if you’re not doing these 5 things”

Just block ‘em. They’re not your friend, they’re like energy vampires. Don’t invite them in. Push them away.

I finally finished my new professional site the other day.

As usual, I got *very* carried away and it’s probably 90% shinier than it truly needs to be but I had a great time with it, I always enjoy creative web stuff.

I feel lucky that I get paid to do stuff I love, I’m thankful for that every day

#gamedev tip: Whenever you are wondering if your LODs are too aggressive, consider that the visitors in Episode One's pod race were colored Q-Tips. And for basically every object, there's a distance at which it can be replaced with a colored Q-Tip.

Oh your product has a brand new interface, you say? You've moved everything around? You've dropped a bunch of new features in there too and I bet AI is involved throughout? Oh that sounds simply super. I can't wait.

In other unrelated news, I'm updating some Trello tasks this morning.

Seriously looking forward to playing the new Doom in a couple of days, then a few days later getting sidetracked from playing the new Doom by work and then a month later feeling guilty that I don't have the time to devote to finishing the new Doom also that I suck at it.

I’m making another silly little interactive web thing at the moment. This one has typography flying all over the place!

It’s fun making stuff like this in a world where everything has to be Very Serious Actually and have three different payment tiers associated with it.
