So many people I know are hurting right now. I wish I could hug everyone, make them a good meal, and chill out on the couch. (This soothes almost all aches.)

Do a little good today if you can. Offer honey to the universe. Find the starlight in the dark.

Darlings, a reminder, in case no one has told you lately: the world is better with you in it.

Stay.

Darlings, a reminder: the people who always show up for you? They need you to return the favor sometimes. Not because of keeping score, but because we all need care.

Life is extra hard right now in general.

Feeling seen and appreciated is everything.

Other than the wines, same...
What do I want for Christmas?

A mysterious manor in the Scottish countryside, a library of vintage novels, a collection of the world’s rarest wines, an owl to deliver and retrieve my post, a butler with a mysterious backstory, and my own personal pastry chef.

I'm really not that hard to shop for.

I personally think there should be an option when you roll up to urgent care where you can write what you suspect your diagnosis is on a little paper before the doctor sees you and if you’re right you get a sticker

I wrote a piece about translation earlier in the year, talking about how a good translation isn't, and can't be, just matching words one-for-one:

How Translation Works, Book Title Edition
As any translator will tell you, translating a piece of fiction isn’t about simply transcribing words one-to-one from one language to another. It’s about capturing a vibe — making…

Authors, remember that you CAN insist on human translation for your foreign-language editions and have it written into your contracts. You can no longer just assume you're going to get a human to work on the book whose every word you wrote with intent.

Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why.

Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin

19 Dec: Legend tells that one #Christmas a fire swept through the forest. The Douglas fir took pity on the fleeing mice and sheltered them inside its cones. To this day the cones bear shapes said to resemble their tiny tails and hind feet, left there as a reminder of #kindness.

Look for the helpers.
And try to be one if presented with the challenge.
One of the photos of the year.

Jackson Doolan, a lifeguard at Tamarama beach, Sydney, runs barefoot TOWARDS the gunfire at Bondi Beach, carrying medical equipment.

Just one of many extraordinary acts of heroism yesterday (Dec 14).

The photo was captured by local resident, Alexandra Ching.

It wasn't just monks who liked their eels...nuns did, too!

In the 1280s the nuns of Romsey Abbey in Hampshire rented lands in the village of Welles to Nicholas de Barbeflete for some customary labor, 57s., 200 herrings, & 300 eels per year.

Can't let the monks have all the fun!

The Dutch sold live eels from ships on the London Thames for 600 years, only leaving in 1938.

But by the 1930s they weren't transporting eels in these ships anymore. The ships stayed parked on the Thames as an antiquarian storefront & the Dutch refilled them from modern tankers.
