Now that Hytale is here, I'm reminiscing about these shark-inspired mob design ideas I sketched out five years ago.

An attempt to diversify our idea of sharks in games, moving beyond the old stereotypes of aggressive mobs without depth! 🦈✨

Illustration of a concept for a shark mob called Ocelot Shark. Inspired by the zebra shark, nurse shark, and bamboo shark, it is yellow with round red spots reminiscent of a jaguar. This shark lays external eggs hanging from corals, which are inspired by the pouch-shaped and spiral design of shark eggs. They would be peaceful and would flee upon showing aggression; sometimes they can be heard making a barking-like noise on the surface of the water when they surface to gulp air. Inspired by the tiger shark, it is bluish in color with dark stripes and yellow details, with a reddish snout tip and protuberances resembling small horns on its head. This shark would tend to hunt other sharks around it, being more active at night. They would be peaceful but could become aggressive when threatened. They are quite curious and do not hesitate to approach. More on the Galleon shark concept. The illustration shows that they can be attracted to food in the player's bag, approach while you have your back turned, and steal the food, quickly swimming away. But it is shown that if you tap its snout as it approaches, it will swim away. Illustration of a concept for a mob called “Wanderer Shark,” inspired by the whale shark and the colors of sea slugs. It would be large and slow, yellow in color with vibrant cyan and blue accents and details on its fins reminiscent of butterfly wings. They would be accompanied by small “fairy fish,” inspired by the behavior of remoras that accompany sharks. They are blue, pink, and yellow in color, and their small fins resemble fairy wings. They would be gentle giants that just wander the open sea in search of magical plankton. They say that their presence is announced when the plankton glows with bioluminescence.

I don't know if it makes sense for the Hytale universe, but it would be really cool to have a little shark as a mount that could detect magical objects hidden in the sea! 🦈✨
Another illustration of a shark mob concept called “Shovelhead Shark.” Inspired by a mix of the bonnethead shark and thresher shark. Pink in color with yellow markings and blue on the tips of its fins. It would be a small hammerhead shark with a large tail that it uses to stun other fish to eat or to defend itself. Sometimes they can be seen digging through sandy benthos in search of hidden snacks, such as stingrays and flounders. More on the concept of shovelhead sharks. They have the ability to detect magical emanations from objects and resources hidden at the bottom of the sea, thanks to their electro-sense in their snout. If the right treat is used, they can be tamed to be used as mounts and help the player find special items hidden at the bottom of the sea. Such as Minerals, Batteries, Runes, and Magic Geodes. Still on the concept of paddlehead sharks. There is a different and rare bluish variation, which is much more difficult to tame, as they are very shy and avoid approaching humans. They can detect rarer magical objects that have much deeper purposes.

A concept for a large leviathan-level mob called Mangoroa. Inspired by the goblin shark, it is a gentle giant hundreds of years old that inhabits the abyssal depths of the ocean. With its translucent body, it is possible to see its slightly glowing skeleton in the darkness. A magical reef inhabits its back, with rare fish and resources. On its dorsal fin, there is a poisonous spine with mysterious properties. A glowing worm inhabits its blind eye, inspired by what happens to Greenland sharks. It is said that anyone who dares to remove the worm from its eyes will cause it so much pain that it will emit a strange cry that hypnotizes the fauna that lives on its back, using them to attack whatever threatens it. A concept for a large leviathan-level mob called Dakuwaqa. Inspired by the Stethacanthus shark, it is a legendary golem thousands of years old that inhabits submerged ancient ruins. No one knows who created it or what its purpose was, only that it wanders aimlessly, protecting the ruins of monolithic citadels that now lie at the bottom of the sea. Its body appears to be made of a metal as golden as gold, and magical crystal scales adorn its back and snout. Its hollow interior houses a mysterious and prehistoric biome, which may contain secrets about its own existence.
