FUN QUOTE from the PubLunch piece about this monstrosity: "Asked whether rightsholders could elect to withdraw from the program, Iraheta wrote, 'To ensure a consistent reading experience, the feature is always on, and there is no option for authors or publishers to opt titles out.'"

This. This was the formative event of my generation & our entire politics in 🇺🇸. The structural break after which we were no longer a full democracy, when 5 Wizards In Robes decided they were a super-legislature & counting all the actual votes didn’t matter. The rest has been 25 years of commentary.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

The regime is weak. That doesn't mean it's not dangerous. But it means it's beatable, and we're beating it.
Trump 0-3 on indicting Tish James and just had his ass handed to him by Indiana Republican legislators he threatened and bullied. Also new low in AP poll at 36% approval.

Jail. It is a moral imperative to put Jared Kushner in jail for his deep corruption.

If we do not jail Kushner and take his wealth we merely encourage future thieves.
Kushner founded Affinity Partners in 2021 after leaving the White House, backed by about 2 billion dollars from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The tactic is brutal. Control the lens and you control reality. Once audiences trust the voice, you can remake the world frame by frame.

Using climate collapse to “cull the planet” was always the fascists plan for dealing with climate change and if the world does not wake up to that reality we will be crushed underneath the world they are attempting to build on the ashes of democracy and shared humanity.

a key part of the Trump 2.0 agenda has been a series of lopsided, precedent-ignoring Supreme Court rulings that basically make it largely impossible for regulators to do their jobs, but somehow journalists at key institutions don't think that's IMPORTANT FUCKING CONTEXT

I think other people have made this point, but: if college is just a vocational school -- if its sole purpose is to "prepare young people for jobs" -- then there's no point in college at all! Just create actual vocational schools.

Corporations and ultra-rich individuals with numerous business interests cannot be trusted to prioritize the public’s right to know over their own bottom lines.

When billionaire conglomerates take control of media, it’s not a win for free speech. It’s a win for oligarchy.
If Paramount is allowed to take over Warner Bros. Discovery, the conservative billionaire Ellison family will control:

Paramount Studios
CBS
CNN
MTV
HBO
Comedy Central
Nickelodeon
Cartoon Network
Warner Bros.
DC Studios
Fandango
New Line Cinema
TNT Sports
TBS
Oracle

And more.

This is exactly what the bosses who put Trump into office were trying to achieve. Crushing the tight labor market from the early Biden years that gave workers - for the first time in my adult lifetime - leverage over their bosses.
NEW

US labor market flows remained sluggish in October data released this morning, as hiring slowed to nearly the lowest level since early COVID

The hiring rate fell to 3.2%, layoffs rose to 1.2%, quits fell to 1.8%, and job openings rose to 4.6%

The fact that SCOTUS is going to tell us who's an American and who's not is THE REASON why the Democrats must stop playing around. It's time to defend immigration as a universal good and in terms of liberty and justice for all.

Accepting rightwing lies as if they're true is how we got here.

The fact that our country did this once was already unconscionable.

To have revived it is truly depraved.

Those responsible belong in prison - all the way up the chain of command.
They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

What’s about to happen at SCOTUS is why I’ve opposed premature declarations of Trumpism’s collapse. Drumbeat since ‘15. Just like Christian fundamentalism has been declared dead every 5-10 years since 1925. When I pub’d The Family in ‘08, interviewers asked why, since Obama was ending Right forever.

There's really nothing inherently harmful about social media as a concept, but the profit-driven platforms want to keep you on them as much as possible, and that's led to a number of social issues including radicalisation.

But suggest regulating them, and you're suddenly seen as anti free speech
