I run a downtown storefront business (on Rideau), and I couldn't agree more with Councilor Leiper. Making downtown work has to center the folks that live here!
I can only re-iterate what a backwards move I consider RTO, particularly in light of ongoing transit challenges. Residents, not commuters, hold the key to a revitalized downtown. I spoke with CTV about it yesterday.

Today I brought a voice of dissent to the city budget vote. The residents of Somerset Ward are my boss: not the mayor and not other members of council. I know you want a city that works and that leaves no one behind. This budget missed the mark, so I voted against it. I will keep fighting for you.

My City Councillor just posted this on Facebook explaining their reasoning around the recent work-from-home debate and I’m genuinely confused. I read the @jleiper.bsky.social motion and I just don’t see what my councillor is saying here. Would someone who supported the motion be up for clarifying?

I am 100% ready to join you to “ban right on red”. Montreal has this, but only because that’s the way it always was. Other cities elected to allow right turns on red, to allow for greater traffic flow. And look who’s paying the price. Day after day, another tragedy. Make this an election issue.
The cyclist got hit at the exact same intersection I was about to bike by, it could have been me. We need to consider banning right on red in all downtown intersections. You shouldn’t be taking your life in your hands every time you walk or cycle. A woman got killed crossing the street a block away.

Today I went to my kid’s middle school heritage fair, which featured a project on the history of drag in Canada, a Lego reproduction of the Oka Crisis, a display about the history of abortion rights, and two children dressed as different versions of Trotsky.
A+, no notes, the kids are alright.
