Wonderful sketch of “teeth painlessly extracted by steam power” adorning an envelope addressed to a certain Dr J. Chapman of Totton, Southampton, and dated 1894. Was it sent in the mail like this? publicdomainreview.org/collection/s...

Here at The Letters Page, we may be slightly biased in favour of any form of letter-writing... 😏 Click below to discover why we are firmly in support of Christmas cards.

In Support of Christmas Cards
At The Letters Page, we believe that Christmas cards are so much more than sentiment: they are imbued with meaning through their simple physicality and personal touches. We think that the impersona…

On this National Christmas Card Day we are pleased to share, from the Library's special collections, a copy of the first commercial Christmas card. It's from 1843, the same year “A Christmas Carol" was published. Both helped establish the Victorian concept of Christmas. blogs.loc.gov/loc/2019/12/...

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

It's important to write hand-written letters to your friends when you need to send them something. Ideally while doing a bit. Maybe you're a union soldier, separated from your ladylove. Maybe a hot air balloon operator.

We mustn't let the realities of today restrain the nonsense within us.

I’m super psyched for this new publication that is an online mag AND a literal vending machine that dispenses awesome zines made by real artists. If you’re in the Indianapolis area, you can visit one of the actual zine machines at Tomorrow Bookstore. (I really wish I lived closer 😭)
✨Zine artist reveal!✨ Lindsay Lusby is a poet, editor, writing coach, letterpress printer, and graphic designer who loves to experiment with all forms of art at the intersection of text and image. Don’t miss her zine, “A Brief History of Perfect Happiness,” in our Summer ‘25 Edit!

I don't want to start a thing so I'll just say that there will never be a good argument for privatizing USPS. That would be like privatizing libraries. The aim of services isn't to be run for profit, they are for serving the greater good, which USPS has been extremely successful at.

This postbox, in Amsterdam’s Central station, can’t quite remember why it’s holding up a blank sign over its head. Maybe it was protesting (‘what do we want? More letters!’) Or perhaps it was part of the station’s signalling. It was a long time ago. It sighs wearily, & feels old.
