I used to be a professional online community builder (1995-2020). I have eclectic interests: coffee roasting, kludge DIY, 16thC Germany, History of Surgery...

Now, I just have opinions: all of them are wrong, but some of them are useful. Willing to learn.

There are few personal fundraisers on here for me, but this is one of them. About two weeks ago, my husband’s best friend was diagnosed with cancer and his fiancée, my bridesmaid, has had to drop everything to take care of him. That includes work (which denied her leave). Help them out, please.

Wow, as someone who supports Propublica and donates to support their journalism every year I am surprised and disturbed to read this.
1/ At bargaining yesterday, @propublica.org management said that they should have 100% discretion to replace workers with AI and would not commit to labeling future AI-generated content.

Mayhem indeed.

Just saw another commercial for it so let me say again:

Mr Clean Magic Eraser is a 10,000 grit melamine sanding sponge. Don’t use them to clean anything in your home. It’ll fuck up your paint and your surfaces and your finishes.

It’s also bad to touch or breathe around, so yeah.

This is actually important for two reasons.

1) Just recognising implicit sexism when it comes up, either in you or others.

2) Recognising the power of framing on social media and how it can override context and even common sense. Next time you're asked to join a dogpile, perhaps consider this.
Okay, this is a fascinating case of social media priming.

So, this creator, Sarah Velush, basically has a channel devoted to deadpan lifestyle humour (a la Chef Tova).

But because a progressive account takes it literally and says... this? Hundreds of comments assuming she's an evil tradwife.
I want this woman thrown in prison for at least a decade.

This is The 0th Law of Online Community Management:

Your ToS/community guidelines apply to you and *all* of the company.
Regardless of user behavior it would seem to me that if you’re trying to create a healthier ecosystem you would simply not ever engage in behavior like this? You would instead demonstrate the standards you’re asking people to live up to?

Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).

Holy shit.

I feel this so much.

Since the couch was my bed and fam was binge watching movies, I had no place to go. I resorted to hiding in the dark dining room with over-the-ear headphones and loud music.

Good people, give your beloved introverts some alone time!
The thing I hate about being a guest in someone else’s house is that once my social battery gets low I need to disappear and for everyone to pretend I’m no longer there.

Sharing this because it's a good tutorial on how avoid behaving badly.
One of the most freeing things for me as an activist was learning to disregard the commentaries of other "activists" whose entire personality was to find anything you were doing and poke a hole in it because why not.

The idea that just because you can make it make sense means it's a valid interpretation of a series of facts, utterances, data points, is exactly why we have methods. Because cognition is powerful enough to spin any story, without constraints, one can infer anything from anything if they want to.
If you're an intelligent person you can always find a way to interpret something however you want, e.g. you can say AI is good & zoom in on facts & figures that seem to make that case. But that's not a good way to analyse & why methods exist. We can use astrology like reasoning to get to any result.

I certainly hope that loads of people are reminded that they haven't fucked to Portishead in a while and are making up for it all weekend long.

Me? It's a gray day in California and I'm listening and remembering great times and partners I had or wish I had the Portishead experience with.
