Some of Earth’s darkest skies are at risk.

New industrial projects near Chile’s Atacama Desert could blind ESO’s world-class telescopes.

What happens when our best eyes into space start losing vision? 🌒

👀 The last technology in my #histtech survey, which centers on 10 techs, is the container ship.

We start the unit Mon.
Stay safe, friends in San Pedro!

“Get inside IMMEDIATELY and close all windows and doors. Turn off air conditioning and heating. Bring all people and pets to an inside room until you receive further instructions,” the fire department said, citing hazardous materials related to the fire on the ship

New Mexico is the only state to have a “state smell”

A bunch of grade school kids said that roasting green chile should be our state smell so their teacher had them write our state Congress and in a shocking display they all came together, wrote the bill, and passed it in a matter of weeks

Totally jazzed after taking my #histtech students to Cornell's Johnson Museum of Art and talking about technological change in art, tech in art, & tech as art.* 🤓

Already have ideas for #lightscapes seminar next semester.

And do I want to try to do an exhibit? 🤔🤩

*Almost minored in art history.

In honor of Larry Summers, I asked the female members of my college class (1987) to say if they had any experiences with sexual harassment by teachers/professors, back when this was tolerated as, I dunno, the cost of attending college, and OH MY GOD.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

17th c orcas?
In this amazing assemblage, hunters barbarously slaughter wildlife until, in center, wildlife turns on them and metes out well-deserved, gruesome justice. Painted in 1647 by Paulus Potter, whose day is today.

man we should bring back the pamphlet
Hey historians 🗃️: Do you know of presses that publish short books (around 30K words / 90 pages plus notes)? I have been working on an article project that could easily turn into an great micro-history of that length, but I'm not sure it would make it to the usual full 60-90K words...

I had the good fortune once of serving with a man who heard an insult to a woman colleague from the man in leadership.

He said, in his usual calm voice, “You know how you just said (insult)?”

Took a beat.

“Never say that again.”

This reminds me of stolpersteine, the brass “stumbling stones” memorializing the lives and murders or exiles of Jews in Europe. They are placed in front of the place where the person “last voluntarily resided.”

I have variations on this assignment (talk on campus, film, etc), require them to engage specifically w 2 different course materials.
Totally worth it because it's often this assignment that shows them connections and relevance of class content to world {gasp}.
OMG they are so cute! A bunch of them went to the Denver Art Museum to look at their collections of Indigenous art. Many are planning to visit sites over Thanksgiving. I love this assignment! Nothing makes me happier than to get students to think about class outside of class. This one's a keeper ☺️

Alice Wong's Catalyst article about plastic straws is consistently 1 of the ~5 most influential readings in my environmental ethics survey, based on students' papers, discussion, etc. It upends some of their worlds (in the best way possible).
Rest in power.

I love the term (and the field of) "envirotech," but I wish there was a similar term that encompassed environmental history and the histories of technology AND science. I can't even imagine what a good portmanteau would be here. Technoscienvironmental history? Scienvirotech? 😂

I've been thinking abt this the past 24 hrs in light of Franklin/Twain quote, 3/2 people can keep a secret if 2/1 are dead.

Demonstrating the vast conspiracy, complicity for over a decade.
You gotta leak that shit

Career death and crime aside, you gotta leak that shit

The idea that *one* person lacks that courage isn’t weird to me

The idea that *nobody* did? What the fuck

I am watching the news unfold today and thinking of every survivor whose trauma is being reactivated. It’s a lot to take in. I am a former rape crisis counselor and I am having a hard time with it all.

So I wrote.

I want to uplift the women hearing in these stories the echoes of their own, the many countless women who have been survivors because the world decided that they were expendable because all women & girls are expendable if a man might be inconvenienced by them & all of our bodies are free game.
