In a new blog (uniconq.substack.com), Denisa Lepǎdatu and I propose a playful, and perhaps useful, framing of fundamental science that goes for the ground truth - namely, as universe conquering, the confrontation of the foundational unknowns and challenges of existence.

Great news! The unethical hepatitis B vaccine trial planned for Guinea-Bissau has been cancelled.

Public pressure and insisting that clinical trials pass ethics analysis worked.

The hardest hit would not be universities that the administration seems to be believe use indirect costs to run programs they find objectionable, but children's hospitals and cancer research institutes.

Talk about making America healthy...

An important milestone for the lab: our first work looking at microtubules, and at the emergence of polarity in neurons. The PhD work of Ciarán, with invaluable help from @harrisonyork.bsky.social and researcher Pascal Verdier-Pinard who joined the team last year. We hope you'll like it! 🧵 9/9
Direct labeling of microtubule turnover reveals in-lattice repair and stabilization patterns in developing neurons

But none of our existing imaging methods (SoRa, STORM…) could really visualize integration within the bundled microtubules in neurites. So Ciarán set up U-ExM expansion microscopy, then performed it on microinjected neurons - now we could see plus-end growth and in-lattice renewal everywhere! 🧵 7/9

Kindness.

People who practice kindness in every aspect of their lives are the ones who hold this world together, making it better, safer, healthier, happier, and more peaceful.

I look for those kind people in this world, and abhor those who reject kindness.
