I guess it's intro time, right?

Name's Rob. I'm primarily a programmer (gameplay &UI), but I'm also big into exploring gaming's past - which I do by making videos about them.

Looking forward to meeting cool folks!

In 1984/5, a spectacular Konami arcade game carved out genre norms for what we'd now call fighting games. Ocean had conversion rights, but were stretched enough that one version ended up subcontracted to a 14-year-old. It still became the UK's bestselling game of 1986.

New post on Yie Ar Kung-Fu:
Yie Ar Kung-Fu – “Hot fighting history”
Ocean’s contract with Konami to port their arcade games under the Imagine label had quickly worked well with Hyper Sports. Even if it did end up competing with Ocean’s own Daley Thompson’s Decathlo…

Don't wanna defer to the bot, don't want my brain to rot.

I may be stubborn at times, but I enjoy the process of learning, even if it means it takes a bit long to achieve a thing sometimes.

But stolen content, resource usage & fasc tendencies just add fuel to my reasons to avoid it.
Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋

(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)
Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.

It’s funny, had a real low energy morning yesterday, which kind of made me feel worse because I wanted to record the voice work for next vid.

Pushing it out today has shad its upsides though, I got a lot more sleep, so I’m feeling better, and might even be able to start the editing too!

Here's one I haven't picked up in a while. Spriggan: Lunar Verse, a PS1 character action game licensed to the Spriggan manga, a year after the movie's release. Published by From Software, developed by their internal b-team Liquid Mirror (of Echo Night 2 fame).

Pulled off my copy of “GG Aleste II” for Game Gear as today’s #RandomGameSaturday pick.

As you’d expect from Compile in their prime, it utterly pushes the Game Gear hard, and is a tightly put together portable shmup.

I absolutely adored Estique when I covered it earlier in the year, and I'm so glad it's going to be made available in a form that folks without actual NES/Famicom hardware can enjoy.

Hot damn. In reasons-I-wish-I-had-an-actual-Commodore-128-news, a chap did a damn awesome enhanced version of Stunt Car Racer.

I had a quick spin of it under VICE, and the optimisations and switching to 2mHz mode (in the borders) really boosts the frame rate!

Alright that's enough of that, time to talk about something important: the game and technological origins of Atari's Sprint series, which then led to Super Sprint. Bring back Super Sprint, it rocks.

oh gosh.

Learning that my noise cancelling headphones can have the noise cancelling enabled when wired (and not trying to connect to my phone) feels like unlocking something I've totally needed when background noise gets too much here.

Hopefully regular service returns in a couple of weeks.

Games Group tonight had its yearly Decathlon - where members had to compete in 10 challenges based on 10 different games/genres/platforms.

Managed to win 3 of the events, and took home the silver! Kind of helped that some of the really skilled folks weren’t there this time 😉
