Bye gas network; had our gas meter removed today

4 years ago our aging (23 yr old) gas boiler was replaced with an air-source heat pump. 3 weeks ago our aging (26 yr old) cooker/ gas hob was replaced with new electric cooker/ induction hob. So we could finally disconnect from the gas grid. Yay!

Great conversation.

What is clear, and hasn't been noted, is that the crowd who listened to Trump's speech, seemed to understand it to mean something along the lines that the clumsy edit conveyed.

What a weird coincidence 🤔

Nowhere in the hysterical pile-on against the BBC in the British press has anyone mentioned that BBC News now has 77 million viewers & listeners in the US and has established itself as the second most trusted news source there.

I love @therestpolitics.bsky.social but have a niggle. It promotes small start up Fuse Energy which is fine, but the impression given is that Fuse Energy is a pioneer in clean energy. Fuse Energy supplies about 50,000 homes vs Octopus Energy's 7 million households. Ditto generating capacity. 1/

SUPERB and angrily unvarnished response, by former BBC chairman, Lord Patten.

You know when someone asks “can you keep a secret?”

What they mean is “I can’t”

This dictum applies to root canal surgery, insulating your house, laser eye surgery and … surprisingly (to some) … also heat pumps.

All the talk of the ‘spark gap’ – the particularly high ratio of electricity unit prices to gas unit prices in the UK – might deter people from getting a heat pump, because they think it will mean they will pay more for their heating than currently, ...

@octopus.energy I’m a customer of yours and we’ve just finished with gas (having replaced a aging dual fuel cooker with an induction hob range cooker; and having replaced the old gas boiler with a heat pump 4 years ago). Now the hard part is getting fully disconnected, and boy you make it hard! 1/

We have a new cooker with induction hob so can finally completely disconnect from the gas network (having got a heat pump 4 years ago, replacing a creaking 25 year old gas boiler). Our creaking old 27 year old cooker (with a gas hob) was no longer serviceable. 1/2

I can beat the medievalists! In 61 CE, revolting British natives attacked the Roman colony of Camulodunum (Colchester). In 2015, in a domestic space, archs found the remains of a whole box of coriander as well as fenugreek, poppy seeds, cumin, & other Indian spices. Homesick Roman women made curry.
I'm pretty sure there were Indian spices in England before potatoes.

This is a good corrective to the BS narrative flowing through the Pielke/AEI/NYP/EID/DOE nexus. Their argument is designed so that we can never ever attribute extreme events to emissions - even singular events that would have *never* [for some suitable finite approximation] have happened before.

The UK’s independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.
