The idea there is a bottom with these criminals is speculative

Great to hear. That’s pragmatic backup. I don’t like backup solution that are overly complex and essentially doubling the costs or worse … my favourite exemplar …

Agreed. Either big building or shared ambient loop. With enough flats, in built up areas, the extra high cost of digging vertically can be shared and become affordable. Easier with new builds but quite a few retrofit examples out there. I love it when they add IHT (Interseasonal Heat Transfer)

Final point Hilliard is always ask for references! I wrote a little guide for heat pump curious householders (a UK version I should stress - would need tweaking for Canada), but much of it relevant to any country www.nailsworthcan.org/getting-a-he... … hope it helps a little 🙏

Good shout Kevin. I believe in Germany resistive heating is quite common for backup. In other words, burning gas can be avoided. Ground source of course adds costs.

So I'd recommend seeking out local experts in your region to explore what others have done and what the latest good practice is. If an air-source heat pump performance drops below an acceptable level (e.g. due to excessive defrost cycles in extreme Canadian cold), then backup may be prudent.

A properly sized 'system' (heat pump & emitters) shouldn't normally require backup even though traditionally used in cold climates. Some models will operate at -25C or even -35C. It depends on the design temperature and that depends on expected climate. Where I live -5C happens, -10C never.

No “ripping out” of new stuff, just natural retirement, and replacing with much more efficient alternatives which are good for our health in the home, and good the planet’s health too.

And what is clear is the crowd who listened to Trump's speech, seemed to understand it to mean something along the lines of the clumsy edit conveyed. What a weird coincidence 🤔

Or, indeed, for 'false balance' in a desperate attempt to avoid accusations of lack of balance!

It's ok to promote new entrants and diversity, but let's not try to claim this is somehow a pioneering new idea. 2/2

That is, unless one uses erroneous SCOP numbers for heat pumps, which is routinely done with EPCs.

Doesn't Elmhurst not need to own up to the issues it can fix before any EPC (much needed) reforms? 3/3

It used to be that EPCs never recommended a heat pump. Its better than 0 now, but barely.

Also, he says that electricity price compared to gas is an issue, implying heat pumps will be more costly to run, but properly installed heat pump can have a lower running costs, despite the 'spark gap'. 2/

I am frustrated at Elmhurst Energy's CEO, Stuart Fairlie claiming it is down the a methodology handed down to them; if that was the case, how come you now have an 'A' rating. Clearly it is the lack of consistency in the methodology that is a major issue even accepting a need of reform. 1/

“don’t tell anyone” is a red flag to me for unburdening some emotional baggage! “I can’t handle this so how about you sharing the load!”. Hmmm, no thanks.

It can be that a complex Venn diagram of what, who and when emerges. Do I tell an aging relative about a deep secret that may hurt them but in order to see if it reveals confirmation of a truth? Secret unclothed can be liberating but also hurtful. There is no right answer. Or is there?
November 9, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Indeed #itscomplicated. In families and amongst friends secrets are sometimes shared through love, sometimes as a power play (control), sometimes through a visceral need to play with emotions; and many other reasons. In a very large extended family it can be hard to know who knows what!
